The 2024 Public Health Distinguished Undergraduate Internship Award recipient is Keya Goswami. Her project, "TransLung Compass: Navigating Patient-Centered Transplant Decisions," aimed to highlight healthcare and quality-of-life factors which patients can use to make an informed decision about pursuing lung transplantation. Keya interviewed patients that either received lung transplants or were on a waitlist to receive one and created an informational codebook summarizing Patient-Centered Decision-Making factors in transplants. Congratulations, Keya!

Engaging in the SODOTO (See one, Do one, Teach one) project during the 2023 Millennium Fellowship was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my year. Inspired by a segment of my resume that articulates my aspiration to be a human mechanic with an exponential impact on people's lives, I strive to be more than a conventional doctor aspiring to the pinnacle of the field. This is where my skills and knowledge in computer science and technology come into play. Much of this potential unfolds through software and Internet technology – write software once, and it can be utilized by a billion people, educating, empowering, and impacting far more lives than I could with gifted hands. In addition to contributing to the SODOTO project as a Millennium Fellow, I also launched it in the University of Nigeria Scholar Accelerator (UNSA) 2023 SDG Challenge. Leading my team through phase one, we emerged among the top five out of twelve competing teams. Shout out to my team member Dorcas Rotimi for her contribution, talent, and relentlessness! The SODOTO project aims to educate society about relevant health challenges, enlightening the public on healthy practices and lifestyles through various means not limited to in-person community outreaches, website and software publications, and online presence. Our vision for digitalization is to create a student-led inter-university website where research, academic, and literary works on sociomedical issues are published and easily accessible to the public for enlightenment. Its contents are not restricted to academic works (articles, essays) or literature (poems, short stories, etc). Content varieties ranging from videos, and infographics, to podcasts will be incorporated to communicate with users. Project Pitch: https://lnkd.in/dmapqGV3 See Website demo: https://lnkd.in/deKk4sAn Here's a content sample on the site for your perusal (happy reading!): https://lnkd.in/ddtb-_h6 I also successfully established a collaboration with the Christian Medical & Dental Associations® (CMDA) Enugu chapter for a rural outreach at Amechi Idodo village square. On the 2nd of December 2023, in collaboration with Millennium Campus Network (MCN) and the University of Nigeria Scholar Accelerator, we conducted a rural medical and surgical outreach. The outreach included Rapid Diagnostic tests (for Malaria, typhoid, blood sugar, and HIV), free insecticide-treated mosquito nets, free drugs, medical counselling, and surgery, among other services (See: https://lnkd.in/dwiQ9BmY) I am grateful for these opportunities that have placed me at the intersection of a humanist medical practice and research for social and health impact in society. 💕 Stay tuned for more 😊

For my internship, we are to rotate through different departments so we can have hands-on experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. So when we move through each department, we are to do a seminar presentation relevant to that unit, in which we would be assigned supervisors. My first presentation was in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department where I presented on Anaemia of Chronic Disease. Sometimes, when someone is short of blood (anaemic), it can be as a result of underlying conditions like cancer, chronic kidney disease, heart problem, and some other chronic infections. To treat such anemia, it is crucial to manage the condition causing it to prevent recurrence. That is after the patient's life must have been saved with blood transfusion. During my research, I was more enlightened on how some chronic conditions cause anemia and it further reinforces my belief that learning should never stop for me and you. #hanifatbello #biomedicalscientist #seminarpresentation #Haematology

Director, Innovation@ Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital| Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awardee | National Technology Award | Mentor @ India Accelerator | Co-Founder - UVEITIS Society of India & Asia Cornea Society
I was never a one trick pony! Even as a student pursuing MBBS, it was hard for me to pin myself down to just books & labs. While my friends & peers would lose themselves in the rigors of studies, I would find myself on basketball courts, leading student committes and organizing events. Although my priorities were clear, my mind was always eager to explore more. I always wondered why one would limit themselves to just one aspect of life, when there's so many dimensions to each of us. The same pattern would unfold in all my future decisions, including the choice of my career, starting with the unconventional decision to join Orbis International, which excited me more so for the thrills of travel than just the job at hand. In the end, Orbis turned out to be much more than a job or even a mission, it gave me the most multidimensional view of the world around us and offered me very diverse perspectives on blindness. Later, when I joined Harvard Medical School with specific focus on learning Ocular Immunology from the world authority Dr. Stephen Foster, I couldn't resist the temptation of learning other modalities on sides, such as histopathology, amnion processing for cell culturing, Keratoprosthesis (Kpro) and several other forward looking technologies littered across the extraordinary hallways of Harvard. As fate would have it, all these side-hustles came in handy when I took up research in CLET & later in the creation of the SLET (Simple Limbal Epithelial Transplantation) technique. As I look back, this has come to be a very consistent pattern in all my endeavors. Remember, we are multi dimentional beings living in a multi dimentional universe - so don't make too much of just one identity...explore all your other dimensions too! Here, I'm trying out my hand at mimicking the great showman! ;)

Data Scientist Intern at AdMiRe Research Lab , Purdue University | Data Analyst |MS in Health Informatics
🚀 Honored to share our groundbreaking work at AdMiRe Research Lab, Purdue University! 🎓 As a Research Assistant Intern, I recently had the privilege of presenting our research at the HHS Fall Research Day, College of Health and Human Sciences, Purdue University. Our mission? To develop an innovative Nomogram Model for predicting side-specific extraprostatic extension in prostate cancer patients, uniting medicine and artificial intelligence. 🧬📈 The heart of our project was the innovative use of machine learning techniques. We meticulously trained our model with complex PSMA PET data from prostate cancer patients, ensuring its accuracy and reliability in real-world applications. The result? A powerful predictive tool that offers crucial insights for clinicians and patients alike. 🤖💡 One of the most exciting aspects of this project was the seamless integration of our model into an intuitive graphical user interface, thanks to the incredible work of my teammate, Mylie_M PSelvam. This user-friendly interface empowers medical professionals to effortlessly input patient data and receive precise, actionable predictions in terms of probability percentage. 🖥️🔮 This work would not have been possible without the remarkable mentorship and guidance provided by Oluwaseyi (Seyi) Oderinde, PhD. His expertise in the field, combined with his dedication to fostering innovation, has been pivotal in shaping our research journey. Maileemithraa Panneerselvam's unwavering commitment and significant contributions have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. 🙌 #medicalai #healthcareinnovation #machinelearning #purdueuniversity #HHSResearchDay #dataanalysis #datascience #indianauniversity
