Is sector experience important in Qualified recruitment and what makes it important? FMCG, Manufacturing, Financial Services, Engineering, Construction – the list goes on. I’ve had countless conversations with clients who are looking to recruit Finance Directors, Financial Controllers, Finance Business Partners etc. and are adamant that they need to see relevant industry experience. Of course, I totally get the principle and the likely short-term gain of someone coming in who knows the fast-paced nature of FMCG or the regulatory requirements of FS, but I also wonder if this can make industries quite incestuous. Does this mean that new ideas are less forthcoming, and the same (sometimes outdated) processes never change or develop? Candidates will always insist they can easily pivot their experience from a service-based industry to a manufacturing environment but is it that easy? Interested to hear the thoughts of candidates and clients who have had positive or negative experiences with sector changes.
