From my observations, many VPs of Sales fall into the same trap: they spend a huge amount of time on current pipelines and do not dedicate enough time to strategy or searching for top talent. I’ve spoken to many VPs of Sales recently. Most of them are exhausted. Most of them spend a lot of time advising their sales reps on current deals. Yes, closing new business is one of the top responsibilities of a VP of Sales. It's one of the top responsibilities, but not the only one. I’ve always believed that a key goal of a VP of Sales is to create highly autonomous teams. To make this possible, you need to hire top talent. To hire top talent, you must devote significant time to recruiting. And if you, as a VP of Sales, are involved in every single deal in your pipeline and help your mediocre reps sell, you will not find time to recruit great people. It’s a closed loop of inefficiency. What about strategy? Thinking about new territories, verticals, setting goals, and developing long-term sales plans. What about tactical improvements? Streamlining the current sales process, refining scripts, templates, etc. All the above mentioned is important. Not to mention the importance of monitoring performance indicators, spotting bottlenecks, and removing frictions in the sales process. A VP of Sales shouldn’t be overwhelmed with the nuances of every deal in the pipeline. A VP of Sales should build autonomous and efficient sales teams, secure desired volumes of new sales, recruit top talents, streamline sales processes, and, of course, develop a consistent and winning sales strategy. Hiring a VP of Sales is a big milestone. It's a move that requires timing, strategy, and foresight. Here is what I recommend... 1/ Wait for Repeatability: Before bringing on a VP of Sales, ensure your sales process is repeatable. You need a foundation that's proven and scalable. 2/ Consider a Management Layer First: Having someone to manage the day-to-day of your SDRs and AEs is often a better choice then going directly to a VP. This structure supports growth and further stregthens your sale org. 3/ Understand the Role: A VP of Sales does more than manage. They're expected to strategize, build processes, hire, and much more. The right candidate can transform your sales, but only if you give them the room to. The decision to hire a VP of Sales should not be rushed. It's about finding the right person, at the right time, with the right approach. If you rush it you will end up spinning your tires for 12 months before resetting your GTM function.
