Yesterday I had the thrill to attend the Future Wave conference by TECHNATION 🚀, an inspiring event that looked at the future of our Canadian tech industry. During one of the panels, Vanessa Herrick, VP of Strategic Communications and Engagement of NPower Canada put out a reminder to every hiring manager that “You’re hiring a person, not a skillset”. 🤝💼 This is so important. 🌟 Your employees are more than the list of skills they can provide. They have baggage much bigger than simply their employment history or their education. 🎓🧳 You can teach someone how to make a spreadsheet, but you can’t teach them adaptability. 📊➡️🔄 You can teach someone how to build a proposal, but you can’t teach them personal confidence. 📑🚶♂️ You can teach someone how to solve a particular problem, but you can’t teach them critical thinking. 🤔💪 When you hire someone, focus on who they are, not what technical skills they have.
