(Read that again) It is no coincidence that our nation is exhibiting all the markers of political and social change OR collapse as we approach 250 of national identity. If it feels like it's bursting at the seams, well, it's because it is. How lucky are we to live at such a time as this!? (I ACTUALLY mean that) We have the power to change the course of human events. Journal 47 ‘Communities and care’ is now up on our website. Over the next few months we will be spotlighting the work of our contributors and revealing the second series of our podcast.  This week we are looking at 'How do we begin to tell the story of a river?'. The article was written by by Ali Reid and Claire Pounder with Dr Paul Stewart, all from MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art)/ Teesside University. This article is a reflection on the creative beginnings of MIMA's exhibition 'People Powered: Stories from the River Tees', which was on display in MIMA’s galleries in central Middlesbrough from July to December 2023. The last 20 years has seen a rise in gallery engagement practice towards new methods in terms of how publics experience exhibitions, artists and museums. From an educational aesthetics point of view, this is defined by Paul Stewart as viewing a particular type of gallery engagement and curatorial activity as a facilitation of, or an engagement with the aesthetic process, with the method of learning at its heart, rather than a substitutive process of translation or engagement to an existing curatorial activity. People Powered: Stories from the River Tees at MIMA is an example of this.  Communities and care is a response to the UK Government’s ‘Levelling up’ agenda connected to a perceived lack of culture or other infrastructure. At its core, is the idea of engaging communities, most often used in the professional arts sector to refer to collective groups working together, defined by a distinguishing factor across a shared experience. Call for Contributions: This year's State of the Arts Symposium will revolve around the theme 'Renewing Common Pathways'. Art and culture provide tools to dream and reimagine ways of doing and being, allowing people to connect and share. How can art and culture keep the commons alive and how can the commons sustain art and culture? Arts Council Malta is issuing a Call for Contributions, for whoever is interested in being part of the Symposium programme. The Future of Art: What Lies Ahead? The art world is constantly evolving. New technologies, new trends, and new artists are constantly emerging. Here are some of the trends that are shaping the future of art: The rise of digital art: Digital art is becoming increasingly popular, as artists find new and innovative ways to use technology to create art. The growing importance of diversity: Artists from all backgrounds are being recognized and celebrated, as the art world becomes more diverse and inclusive. The increasing focus on sustainability: Artists are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of their work, and they are finding ways to create art that is more sustainable. It is impossible to say for sure what the future holds for art. However, it is clear that the art world is a vibrant and ever-changing place.

🌟 Reflections on "How to Exhibit (Hi)Stories?" at the Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss 🌟   This past Sunday, we hosted, in cooperation with the Stiftung Humboldt Forum, a talk titled "How to Exhibit (Hi)Stories?" featuring Dr. Ruth Rosenberger, a contemporary historian and digital expert at Haus der Geschichte in Bonn; Joachim Baur, a cultural scientist at the Technical University Dortmund; and Anke Schnabel, curator of the exhibition "Blown Away: The Palace of the Republic" at the Stiftung Humboldt Forum. The discussion, moderated by Nhi Le, content producer and journalist, delved into the intricate world of curating historical narratives.   Museums are often seen as the cultural memory of our society, charged with the task of preserving our cultural heritage and making history accessible. However, as the speakers pointed out, this task is far from straightforward.   Joachim Baur highlighted the complexities of curating historical narratives: "Objects as material culture or physical things play a role. But an exhibition is not just about placing objects you happen to have. It’s about creating a new constellation of things, objects, and visitors in a space, where something new and exciting happens. This includes not just three-dimensional objects but also videos, documents, and more. They need to be integrated to create an impactful experience."   Ruth Rosenberger emphasised the importance of historical knowledge: "History is interesting because it explains why our present is the way it is. It creates awareness of our achievements, as well as our shortcomings and challenges."   Anke Schnabel pointed out a key challenge when combining art, history, and storytelling: "Artworks stand on their own, but with history, it can be difficult for people because we have to be careful not to over-explain."   The event underscored the transformative power of museums in fostering dialogue and understanding through thoughtfully curated exhibits. AAANZ conference this year is at ANU School of Art & Design Centre for Art History and Curatorial Studies. and it’s the 50th anniversary. #SOaD #CAHAT Naomi Zouwer (UC), Tony Curran (UTAS) and I are chairing a panel entitled ‘Mark Making as Knowledge Transfer’ to ignite a 🔥 conversation around drawing. Contemporary drawing practices reflect the changing approaches that artists and designers make when generating ideas, problem solving, and sharing knowledge across disciplines, technologies, societies, communities, and cultures. As a continuously evolving practice, drawing activates the present and creates dialogues around imagined futures while connecting with and communicating past histories and narratives. The panel welcomes submissions from researchers who are addressing aspects of drawing – through practice, art history, theory or curatorship – and who are interested in ideas of drawing as data, collective or collaborative engagement, cultural knowledge, tacit knowledge or interdisciplinary research. Looking at this multifaceted view of drawing practices, we hope that the discussion enlivens fresh modes of knowledge interactions, critical thinking, learning, and collaboration. #drawing #markmaking #practice #research This panel will be convened in person. Thursday 18th of January 2023, 5-7 pm I will give a talk at NEC The New Europe College in Bucharest. The talk is based on one of the chapters of the recently published book, The Porous Museum: The Politics of Art, Rupture and Recycling in Modern Romania Bloomsbury Publishing Plc What is considered a ‘trace’ of the communist past is a domain of negotiation. In this desire to identify what was left from communism, there is a blurred boundary between things, people, rhythms of work and values attached to labour, as well as practices. In this presentation, based on one of the chapters of the recently published book, I talk about 1. political contestation manifested towards communism as a whole; 2. care, or standardised organization and 3. playfulness and creativity. These three perspectives un-package communism as singularity and show the use of heritage as political participation. The museum can be seen as a representative post-socialist institution, a microcosm of the wider nation state and the ways in which the past is remembered, partially integrated, staged or rejected has to do with the interdependency of politics, ethics and aesthetics that I call ‘porosity.’ The Porous Museum considers questions of recycling and rupture, with some exhibits and practices carried over from one regime to another, whilst others have been discarded in favour of the completely new.

Booking trips, watching funny videos on YouTube, scrolling through Instagram— we constantly use the internet. Many things that used to cost money, such as newspapers or writing letters to friends, now seem quickly available and free. However, appearances are deceptive — if we don't pay with money, then with our personal data, our time, or our attention. Websites use "Dark Patterns" to tease these goods (e.g., data, time, attention) out of us, whereby we often don't even notice this kind of "payment". Dark Patterns are design patterns that obscure information, capture our attention, or push us to purchase a product. At the Dresden Science Night, we will provide an insight into the topic from a legal and psychological perspective. In our exhibition room, you can learn about Dark Patterns: What are they, where do they occur, how do they influence us, and what can we do about them? We're also interested in your experiences: Where do you feel "influenced" on the internet? What strategies do you know to deal with this influence, and how can lawmakers actually act?
