🚀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗩𝗧𝗢𝗟 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗝𝗲𝘁? 🚀 At ✈️ ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace, I had the opportunity to experience the #LiliumJet firsthand. Meeting Alberto Caruso, Head of Design at Lilium, and hearing the design story of the aircraft was definitely a highlight of my ILA visit. The mockup itself is impressive, with premium materials and a surprisingly spacious cabin. The thick side walls housing the batteries add a cosy and secure feeling. It featured club seating with two rows of two seats facing each other, a more spacious layout than the six-seater. However, considering the aircraft has such a small door and very tight aisle, a few questions arise: 1️⃣ How long will it take for passengers to board and disembark?  2️⃣ How will passengers get their 🧳 luggage behind the last row of seats?  3️⃣ How will passengers evacuate through a single door in an emergency? 🚪 4️⃣ What is the market size for this high CAPEX and OPEX aircraft? 📊 In conclusion, at ELECTRON aerospace, we also prioritise customer experience, aiming for a car-like travel feel. Yet, our Electron 5 features a full-size cargo door, making entry and exit easy, much like a 🚐 #MercedesVito. The luggage area is accessible from the outside, and our seats are adjustable for car-like comfort. Four years since revealing a ‘vision concept’ at CES 2020, Supernal has unveiled its first eVTOL vehicle concept – S-A2 – at this year’s edition of CES. The blending of “design with functionality” has formed the basis of S-A2’s design, which brought together Supernal’s engineering teams and Hyundai Motor Group’s automotive designers. The pilot-plus-four-passenger aircraft is planned for entry into service in 2028, according to Supernal. “S-A2 is a true representation of ‘auto meets aero’,” Luc Donckerwolke, president, chief design officer and chief creative officer, Hyundai Motor Group. “Drawing on the competence of Supernal’s top aerospace engineers and Hyundai Motor Group’s world-renowned automotive designers to create human-centric design that maximises passenger experience and safety.” Ben Diachun, chief technology officer, Supernal added: “Supernal’s product concept vehicle is the result of the creativity and hard work of our world-class team.” Read full: https://lnkd.in/evHpiJRs

SkyDrive has announced continual progress with the Suzuki Motor Corporation since its collaboration agreement on sharing business and technology in March 2022, successfully followed by a basic agreement on manufacturing in June 2023. SkyDrive established a production subsidiary on 1 September 2023, for its SD-05 at a plant owned by Suzuki, which will be used to produce up to 100 potential eVTOLs per year. Building work is expected to begin in the Spring 2024. SkyDrive and Suzuki have been collaborating in areas of business and technology R&D, planning of manufacturing, mass production systems, and the development of overseas markets with an initial focus on India. SkyDrive is developing suitability use cases in India in areas where tourists visit historical buildings along rivers or by the sea. These routes are travelled by Indian religious pilgrims crossing mountains and rivers. To address serious social mobility and health issues, such as air pollution caused by excessive CO2 and daily urban congestion emissions, SkyDrive continues to discuss with local stakeholders how to contribute to the mobility revolution. This ties in with the decade-long achievements made by Suzuki in India and works to deliver on the potential of a UAM eVTOL future. SkyDrive is exhibiting its 1/5 scale SD-05 at Suzuki’s booth at the Japan Mobility Show 2023. Alongside, SkyDrive will also exhibit the full-size SD-03 Mock-Up in the Tokyo Future Tour exhibition from Saturday 28 October until Sunday 5 November. 🚁🌆 Flying Cars: A Vision of the Future or Just a Flight of Fancy? 🚀💭 From his suite on the 23rd floor of the Fairmont Dubai, Fethi Chebil, PhD, the Quebec-based CEO and founder of Vports, gazes out at luxury cars and a driverless metro line stretching to the horizon. "I can see the future," he quips, referring with a wink to Dubai's Museum of the Future. But in reality, he's envisioning something equally impressive: #flyingcars. #Airtaxis, the long-awaited revolution in short-haul passenger transport, are inching closer to reality, with electric air taxis set to take flight by 2028, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's regulatory timeline. Over 700 prototypes and designs for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (#eVTOLs) are in the works, promising to revolutionize urban transportation. The aviation industry is abuzz with orders and investments, with #UnitedAirlines, #AmericanAirlines, and car companies like #Stellantis and #Toyota joining the race. However, there are hurdles to overcome, such as technological challenges and regulatory progress, with Canada slightly lagging behind its counterparts. While aerial taxis hold immense promise for urban commuting and cargo transport, there are still critical questions about safety and broader public acceptance. A McKinsey & Company survey revealed that 15 to 20 percent of respondents could imagine using a flying taxi service in the future. Why is the A380 faster than the B777 even it’s much heavier and the engines produce less thrust than the GE 90 engines? Please let me know what think. One of the chief determinants of what economic cruise speed of an aircraft will be like is the sweep of its aerofoils, particularly its wings. At quarter chord, the Airbus A380 has a wing sweep of 33.5° . The Boeing 777 has a wing sweep of 31.6° , having been optimised for Mach 0.83 cruise, but found to be good at Mach 0.84 during its flight test campaign . Optimised here means the entire design has been geared for a particular set of performance targets, and that includes trade studies between fuel economy, payload, the higher cruise numbers, and noise – both interior and exterior. That affects every aspect of the design; for example, the engine intakes need to be optimised for a specific Mach cruise range to deliver the most streamlined, subsonic air into the engine for best performance. Obviously, the A380 does achieve its balance with flying colours. Swept Wings: This image compares the sweeps of the A380 and 747 wings. The A380 is capable of Mach 0.85 cruise, while the 747 will typically cruise at Mach 0.86. Wing sweeps of the 777 Classics, 777x, and A350. The A350 typically cruises at Mach 0.85 compared with 0.84 for the 777 Classics. Boeing wing sweep Swept wings increase the distance air must travel, so delaying shockwave formation at higher Mach numbers. That is why wings are swept. Whitcomb’s Area Rule explains the need to keep a uniform cross-sectional area for improved performance at higher Mach numbers. The Boeing 747’s upper deck together with its aft tapering fuselage, and swept wings, with widely spaced engines, produced a design with very good compliance with Whitcomb’s Area Rule. The wing sweep of some of the largest aircraft is clearly seen in this infographic. The 747 has the greatest sweep in all aerofoils amongst the largest aircraft. Engine Power: You need power for higher Mach cruise, but not the most powerful engine Even though the 777 has more powerful engines than the A380, the A380 has greater total thrust than the 777. Still, the A380 has greater total thrust than the 747, and the Jumbo Jet is still faster. Consider that the 777–300ER has two GE90–115B turbofans each capable of slightly more than 115,000 lbs of thrust (230,000 lbs total), compared to Concorde with four Olympus 593 turbojets each capable of 31,000 lbs of thrust (124,000 lbs), or 38,050 lbs (152,200 lbs total) with relight. At Mach 2.0 flight, Concorde did not require relight; this is called supercruise capability. Of course, the 777–300ER is a much larger aircraft than Concorde. So Concorde has higher power to weight ratio than the 777 – 0.304 to 0.373 vs 0.298. Note here that in supercruise, Concorde is only slightly ahead of the 777 in power to weight ratio. Yet, because of ETOPS rules – and single engine takeoff performance – the 777 has superior power to weight ratio compared to the A380 at 0.253.

#Electric #Aircraft at ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace 2024 Three truly #different #electric #aircraft: 1. The “mike-drop” Lilium Jet. The first 4 serial aircraft MSN 1-4 are in production now. MSN1 will be used for #static tests and MSN2 for #flight tests, to commence late 2024. Already 56 #aircraft are sold (at 7-10 M€), in addition to 700 LOIs. At a range of 175 km, cruise at 134 kts, and with a flexible cabin seating 4-7 pax this is no surprise. And it will get even better, through slightly larger windows and roughly 10 cm increased cabin width as the new batteries require less space. They will stay in the fuselage sidewalls, with easy access panels. The only “issue” is the open luggage area in the rear. Not my favourite – messy when boarding, and a messy look in flight. 2. The VÆRIDION Microliner. The “opposite” of the Lilium Jet in many aspects, and still an excellent design. New data revealed include MTOM = 5.7 tons, payload 1 ton, and peak charging power = 800 kW. Performance is now at 400 km (IFR) range; 800 m for take-off; and cruise at 190 kts (max.). Based on my calculations, on a 175 km trip, the Microliner consumes just 106 W/km/pax vs. Alice’s 174 W (and Lilium Jet’s 188 W). Great! 3. The Elektra Solar GmbH Trainer. When the Helsinki e-plane association bought the Pipistrel Alpha electric we only dreamed about 2.5 h endurance and 300 km range. Now such performance exists, and the Elektra #Trainer is easy to register as an #ultralight. In the 1990’s I calculated carbon fibre wing-boxes, even for the #A380. The #Trainer has #carbon fibre #wings, as it should. It is the purest #electric #airplane design I’ve encountered, yet. Everything is optimised for electric propulsion and low weight. Consequently, this plane is the first multi-purpose electric 2-seater. In summary, on #ILA display were 3 German-origin #aircraft in different development phases, following distinctly different design philosophies adapted to different markets.
