AI is the fastest growing deep technology in the world, with huge potential to rewrite the rules of entire industries, drive substantial economic growth and transform all areas of life. With over 3,100 companies AI companies, employing over 50,000 people and contributing to £3.7 billion to our economy, the UK is already a world leader in AI. We benefit from a thriving research and development scene, for example, the Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s National Centre for AI and Data Science and has a partnership with 13 of the UK’s most internationally recognised universities carrying out R&D in AI. Despite its widespread lack of familiarity, AI is a technology that is transforming every walk of life. It is a wide-ranging tool that enables people to rethink how we integrate information, analyze data, and use the resulting insights to improve decisionmaking. Our hope through this comprehensive overview is to explain AI to an audience of policymakers, opinion leaders, and interested observers, and demonstrate how AI already is altering the world and raising important questions for society, the economy, and governance.

With significant deep tech know-how and $765M already raised by local AI companies, Greece also seems one step ahead in the number of technology transfer initiatives, compared to the rest of Southeast Europe. That said, it's early days and spreading the entrepreneurial mentality among researchers is still a challenge. Even though we already have some role models for the next wave of entrepreneurs - founders who are determined to change the world and crash competition - we need more people who go the extra mile and offer 10x solutions instead of 10%," according to Alex Alexakis, Investor at Marathon Venture Capital. “Greece and the CEE region are on the cusp of an AI-driven transformation, with AI adoption expanding across various sectors. While there are significant opportunities for growth and innovation, careful consideration of ethical, regulatory, and workforce implications will be essential to harness AI's full potential and minimize potential disruptions. I had the opportunity to participate recently in Viva Technology, which is France’s largest technology conference. It was a great chance to reconnect with several VCs and entrepreneurs in our space, and I appreciate next54 (our awesome partners) and Seedstars Africa Ventures for hosting side events full of insightful discussions. I was also blown away by the line-up of speakers on AI, including Eric Schmidt, Robin Li, Yann LeCun, Dario Amodei, and Arthur Mensch – many of the key people driving the revolution (also: one of my favorite journalists, Andrew Ross-Sorkin)! These were a few of my top takeaways: AI is likely to be as impactful – if not more so – than the internet and mobile phones. During earlier technological shifts, there have always been sizeable differences between when early and late adopters incorporated the technology into their business, e.g. many companies still hadn’t launched a website yet in the mid-2000s. Given the power of AI to transform customer outcomes, late adopters are likelier to suffer more than in previous technological shifts. There are central vs. peripheral ways to incorporate AI into your company. You ideally want to find use cases that are meaningful to your customers that allow you to incorporate AI directly into the core of your offering; this is what will lead to transformative outcomes for your clients. For early-stage start-ups, there’s not much value in trying to compete with the tech giants on building new Large Language Models (LLMs), due to the high resource intensity & large head starts that they have; where there’s more room to shine is in combining existing LLMs' capabilities with your own proprietary data, expertise on use cases in your particular industry, and access to customers. This is the approach that we’re taking at Lifestores Healthcare and I’m looking forward to share more about the impact we’re having with AI in healthcare over time!
