“The day you start living in another country, you are no longer a tourist or a traveler, but you’re not a native either... 🔈 When I heard this audio clip on Instagram for the first time, it hit hard. 🇳🇴 🇺🇸 #Oslo is an amazing place to live, work, and raise a family. Jonathan and I have been here for more than 12 years, and I’m proud to say that we’ve learned and grown more than either of us could have imagined. We have friends and family-of-choice around us. Solid networks. Our Norwegian isn’t great yet, but that doesn’t hold us back too much. Our daughter is thriving in public school. We own our home; we plan to stay. But the struggle has still been real. 💔 ❤️🩹 Every international person I know in Oslo has stories about "belonging… and not really belonging." Many end up heading home. Then again, the myriad who “find home” in Norway have lots of tips, hacks, and other #wisdom to share. I was honored to share some of my stories about this immigrant journey recently with a few fellow international pros at a roundtable discussion hosted by Kingbird Executive Search & Oslo Business Region. The questions we tried to answer together were: ❓ How can we make #Norway more attractive to #internationaltalent? And how can we make it easier for that talent to thrive here and want to remain? To put the question another way: How can we put Norway’s “place branding” to work as an #EmployeeValueProposition (EVP)? Norwegian #values and norms should provide an excellent EVP: Work-life balance, strong social benefits, high wages, a focus on employee well-being, a societal commitment to #equality, #sustainability and environmental responsibility. But the truth is that Norway is facing an impending #talentdeficit. Norway lags behind its sister Scandinavian countries in terms of talent attraction and retention already. And given the current economic climate (i.e. weak Norwegian Krone), the #talentgap is in danger of growing out of control. 😱 Norway MUST take intentional steps to attract and retain more international talent, especially in #hightech industries. Good news! I love it here. ❤️ I believe Norway is a brilliant place for international people to live, grow, and thrive. But I also believe Norway can do better, and I’m happy to help! 💪 🙏 Big thanks to OBR and Kingbird and others who are prioritizing this conversation and pushing Norwegian employers and government officials to take action before it’s too late. 🕯️🕯️ 🕯️ We’re just a few weeks away from #julebord season. Days are shortening and darkening. I’m lighting candles and making my home #koselig. As the sleet begins to fall, I don my wool underclothes and remember "Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!" And I thank my lucky stars for this life in Norway, carved out one challenge at a time. 🏡 #home Special shouts to Lars Jørgen Epland Suzanne Lie Mari Strømsvåg and Charlotte Homme Sónia Fernandes Thomaz Gjesdal Fabiano Ribeiro Roland Mosheim Chelsea Ranger et al!

🌱 Understanding Transnational Localism 🌱 Transnational localism is about businesses supporting local economies by setting up in smaller towns and rural areas. This approach helps create jobs and boosts economic growth where it’s most needed. By doing this, companies can succeed while also being socially responsible. This is an important discussion for New Zealand and we see this already in some of Northlands smaller towns. It's a fabulous concept and can bring many benefits and rewards like: 🌱 Job Creation: More jobs in small communities reduce the need to move to cities. 🌱 Community Growth: Investing in local schools, training, and infrastructure helps communities thrive. 🌱 Cost Savings: Operating in smaller towns can be cheaper and lead to a dedicated workforce. We could all being more conscious about where we are hiring and hire Locally, with a focus on finding and training talent from the community. Getting involved and participating in local projects and development. Also, being sustainable and using eco-friendly practices that benefit both the company and the environment. What are your thoughts?

We’re kicking off 2024 by getting back to our roots! We caught up with our founder, Greg Fernando, to ask him a few questions about how New to Sweden all got started. Check out our conversation below! :) 1️⃣ What motivated you to start New to Sweden? “To be honest, everything started out of frustration! At first, I thought what myself or my friends were experiencing was isolated, but after doing some research it was easy to see that the problems in Sweden were more structural — and affecting almost every immigrant. I started New to Sweden to try to solve those structural problems.” 2️⃣ What approach does New to Sweden take? “We realized early on that we needed to find a holistic solution for integration in Sweden. It’s one thing to coach people on how to network or find a job, but if Swedish employers weren’t ready to hire people with international backgrounds, that wouldn’t make much of a difference in the end! So we also started coaching companies on how to be more open with their hiring and be more inclusive in the workplace. Since our inception, our work has also expanded to include our Swedish communities, too. Because if the broader community is not welcoming, we’re going to lose the great talent that’s already here!” 3️⃣ Who is New to Sweden for? “We’re pushing for a coordinated, holistic solution, and we’re here for any newcomers to Sweden who need the help — no matter their ethnicity or reason for being here. To be quite honest, we’re here to help Swedes who are second- and third-generation immigrants, too, since we’ve seen how people who are born here but have foreign heritage also encounter similar obstacles. And of course we're reaching out to Swedes whose families have lived here for generations, too. Integration is a two-way street that needs everyone working together.” #DiversityAndInclusion #Inclusion #Sverige

"Embracing Denmark: My 4-Year Journey of Challenges and Triumphs! 🤗 😊 Completing four years in Denmark marks a significant milestone for me. I've not only achieved fluency in Danish but also formed deep connections with local friends, integrated into the community, established a thriving business, and met the Integration rules by law. 😌 Reflecting on my journey, the transformation from a challenging first year, contemplating a return home, to a flourishing fourth year showcases the resilience and success I've found in Denmark as a foreigner. This success extends beyond just my professional life; it encompasses my emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Building meaningful connections was a pivotal part of my experience. Actively engaging in events and language classes allowed me to form lasting friendships, creating a supportive expat community that feels like a second family. 😆 Venturing into Denmark's business landscape presented challenges, but with determination and support, I successfully established my business, contributing to the entrepreneurial diversity of the country, with further growth on the horizon. 👩💼 Engaging with the local community, whether through volunteer work or cultural events, provided a sense of belonging that transcended nationality. My involvement in the community and church enriched my personal experiences and deepened my connection with Denmark. 🤗 Navigating cross-cultural relationships brought both excitement and challenges. Meeting my Danish spouse through various avenues and overcoming cultural differences has added a beautiful dimension to my Danish journey. 😍 In conclusion, the foreigner's journey in Denmark involves resilience, openness, and proactive integration. Those who navigate cultural complexities, build meaningful relationships, engage in business ventures, and actively participate in the community often discover Denmark as not just a place of residence but a true home filled with enriching experiences and lasting connections. For me, it's the people and meaningful collaborations that I value the most, making Denmark more than just a land; it's a place where fruitful connections and collaborations thrive." 😁 #denmark #expatlife #social #mentalhealth #emotionalwellbeing #foreigner #fendous
