We are thrilled to now be able to share videos and slides of some of the presentations from the LBMA/LPPM Global Precious Metals Conference 2023. First up, we have Session 3: Mega PGM Demand Trends Through Different Lenses, featuring Bernhard Fuchs, Dr. (Umicore), Margery (Marge) Ryan (Johnson Matthey), and Emma Townshend (Implats) as speakers, and moderated by Nicky Shiels (MKS PAMP). This session explores the outlook for platinum group metals, the risks associated with recycling catalysts, and how the energy transition has unique implications for the PGMs, while the PGMs have unique implications for the energy transition. And secondly, we have Elin Hauge’s (AI & Business Strategist) keynote address Artificial Intelligence: Beyond the Hype and Hysteria. In her presentation, Elin tackles the ever-present fear of machines taking over humanity and explains how we can use mathematics to ameliorate the benefits of AI. "AI is the natural next step," Elin says in her speech. "We have the data and the processes. Now it makes sense to apply maths to make the data useful. But we need to become better versions of humans before we can trust the machines to become better machines." Also available to view are the Welcome Remarks from Paul Fisher (LBMA Chairman), John Cullen (LPPM Chairman and Director, Johnson Matthey) and Ruth Crowell (LBMA CEO), as well as a special address by Chairman Yu (Shanghai Gold Exchange) focusing on the importance of collaboration. We hope you enjoy the available Conference presentations, and keep an eye out for more that will be released in due course: https://lnkd.in/eMCqESm8 #PreciousMetals #Conference #LBMA2023 #Platinum #ArtificialIntelligence #Barcelona

When technology is used to degrade humanity into servitude, suppressing the rational choice to rebel, that’s the Brave New World message of Aldous Huxley. The quote “People will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think” The quote is attributed to Aldous Huxley. It reflects his concerns about how technological advancements might impact human freedom and thought. This quote is often associated with Huxley’s views on the potential for technology to be used in ways that could control and oppress society, rather than liberate it. ******* See… https://lnkd.in/evfFaiBr “…. It seems to me that the nature of the ultimate revolution with which we are now faced is precisely this: That we are in process of developing a whole series of techniques which will enable the controlling oligarchy who have always existed and presumably will always exist to get people to love their servitude. This is the, it seems to me, the ultimate in malevolent revolutions shall we say, and this is a problem which has interested me many years and about which I wrote thirty years ago, a fable, Brave New World, which is an account of society making use of all the devices available and some of the devices which I imagined to be possible making use of them in order to, first of all, to standardize the population, to iron out inconvenient human differences, to create, to say, mass produced models of human beings arranged in some sort of scientific caste system. Since then, I have continued to be extremely interested in this problem and I have noticed with increasing dismay a number of the predictions which were purely fantastic when I made them thirty years ago have come true or seem in process of coming true.” “… And the same way with various technological advances now, I mean we need to think about the problems with automation and more profoundly the problems, which may arise with these new techniques, which may contribute to this ultimate revolution. Our business is to be aware of what is happening, and then to use our imagination to see what might happen, how this might be abused, and then if possible to see that the enormous powers which we now possess thanks to these scientific and technological advances to be used for the benefit of human beings and not for their degradation.”

🔬 Innovation and technology are the driving forces behind the future we are building at TotalEnergies. I recently came across an inspiring article from the MIT Technology Review titled 35 innovators under 35. 🌟 Among these innovators is Sharon Li, recognized as the Innovator of the Year for her pioneering research in AI safety. Her work aims to prevent catastrophic failures in AI models when faced with unfamiliar scenarios, which aligns with our commitment to safety at TotalEnergies. 🌍 Another innovator, Young Suk Jo, co-founder of Amogy, is addressing climate and energy challenges by engineering solutions to decarbonize the transportation sector. His startup focuses on using ammonia, a common fertilizer ingredient, as a fuel for trucks and ships, offering higher energy density compared to compressed hydrogen. This resonates with our mission to create a sustainable energy future. 🤖 In the field of robotics, Lerrel Pinto is working to improve the functionality and usability of home robots by incorporating learning mechanisms that enhance their performance over time. This innovation is a testament to the potential of technology to transform our everyday lives. These technologies - whether it's AI safety, decarbonization solutions, or robotics - are highly relevant to us at TotalEnergies. They align with our commitment to safety, sustainability, and efficiency. Staying abreast of these innovations inspires us to integrate cutting-edge technology into our operations, driving progress and maintaining our position as a leader in the energy sector. Let's continue to embrace innovation and technology as we shape the future of energy! 💡🌱
