Huge concerns with these new CPT codes. Unless the codes reimburse just as much as other CPT codes or more than other CPT codes, this actually has the potential to harm outpatient providers by REDUCING their overall reimbursement. For example, we may now be required to use this CPT code when providing programs like Skills2Care instead of let's say a self-care code, which may reimburse more. It also causes huge challenges and possible concerns for those of us doing consulting. I've been sharing these concerns with AOTA representatives for about 3 years. This is only a win if these codes reimburse well - and considering there are more proposed cuts to Med B for 2024, I'm not feeling overly confident. We need to support the providers of these services and advocate for reimburse rates that reflect our skill.
Thanks to the collaboration and joint advocacy efforts by AOTA, American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), and The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), three new CPT codes for caregiver training without the patient present will become available for use beginning January 2024, representing a big win for therapy practitioners providing this vital service.
