I have stood on top of the mountain and shouted this several times but it continues to fall on deaf ears.. In the realm of soccer, one intriguing trend cannot be overlooked - the emergence of exceptional players hailing from poverty-stricken backgrounds. The question arises: why does this pattern persist? The psychology behind it is rather straightforward. Discomfort and destitution instill an unwavering determination in individuals, propelling them to utilize their talent as a means of escape. A prime example of this extraordinary phenomenon is Victor Osihmen, who began his journey as a humble water boy on the streets of Lagos but rose to become the recipient of the prestigious Top African Player Award. The correlation between poverty and soccer prowess is not merely coincidental. Living in adverse conditions often fosters a resilient spirit and an insatiable hunger for success. These aspiring athletes refuse to succumb to the hardships that surround them; instead, they channel their energy into mastering the beautiful game. Soccer becomes a beacon of hope, an avenue through which they can transcend their circumstances and embrace the prospect of a brighter future. Victor Osihmen is a prime embodiment of this narrative. From his early years as a water boy, Osihmen's passion for soccer burned fiercely. Recognizing the transformative power within the sport, he resolved to harness his skills and pave his way to success. With relentless dedication and rigorous training, he honed his abilities and ascended to remarkable heights, ultimately clinching the Top African Player Award. His humble beginnings have propelled him to become an inspiration for aspiring athletes across the continent and beyond. Beyond the anecdotal evidence, there is a growing body of research that underscores the connection between poverty and sporting aptitude. Adversity molds one's character, igniting an intrinsic drive to overcome obstacles and find solace in the realm of sports. In impoverished communities, soccer assumes the role of a unifying force, transcending social and economic barriers. It acts as a catalyst for change, empowering individuals to break free from the chains of poverty and seize opportunities previously unattainable. For policymakers and INVESTORS providing opportunities for skill development, access to resources, and mentorship, the shackles of poverty can be broken, and untapped talent can blossom into something extraordinary. It is essential to recognize the immense reservoir of potential residing within these communities and foster an environment that nurtures and cultivates it. The best soccer players do not merely emerge from poverty-stricken environments by chance. Their journey is a testament to their unyielding spirit, their unwavering determination, and the transformative power of the beautiful game. By embracing this reality, we can open doors to a brighter future ,paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous society.
"Recognizing the need for an alternative to the expensive, up-or-out model that has dominated the culture, the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) created a playbook on how to get and keep more underrepresented children playing sports. Seventeen Title I, or high poverty, elementary schools in Maryland now offer a free, eight-week afterschool program, engaging more than 900 children. The MSYSA program is called Let’s Play!, made possible with the help of innovative partnerships, funding from government that aims to improve the mental health and educational achievement of students, and incentives to recruit coaches from the community. "The Maryland Sports Commission made Let’s Play! part of its... 2026 World Cup bid and has continued its financial support." Learn more about the Let's Play! Legacy Initiative from MSYSA in this article from The Aspen Institute: #MDSportsTourism https://lnkd.in/ei-anSYD

I really like this graphic for helping athletes to recognize that the significance of their experiences isn't diminished because they aren't the 'worst case scenario.' Each of these events has a valid impact on mental well-being, and acknowledging this is the first step in creating a supportive environment where healing can begin. #MentalHealthAwareness #AthleteMentalHealth

🏈 As the National Football League (NFL) Draft unfolds in my lovely state of Michigan tonight, most people realize it's an exciting time for the athletes and their families who will be realizing their dreams! However, along with the excitement, we should be talking about the importance of financial literacy education for these athletes because the financial statistics for professional athletes is alarming. #NFLDraft #Detroit #FinancialLiteracy #SecureYourFuture #AthleteFinances #NILmoney #MoneyManagement #FinancialEducation #SmartSpending #NFLProspects #FutureStars

AFL Academy Teacher at O'Loughlin Catholic College Head of Pint Football Club Junior Development Founder of Darwin’s Middle School AFL Competition
𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐚: "𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐲!" It's time to challenge the stigma; “It’s just school footy!" This comment, often echoed around school games, highlights the lack of understanding around the power of football within schools. Why is it that we embrace club footy so passionately, while representing our school—the place and community where we spend the most time—is so undervalued? Darwin's Middle School AFL Competition is striving to change the way we approach school football in the community and value it just as much as club football. Football can be used as a valuable tool in the education and development of young people. Improved physical and mental health, positive community engagement, academic incentives and lifelong friendships are just some of the profound benefits of football. We need to fully embrace the school footy culture to truly unlock the extensive benefits it offers. So next time you’re in a conversation about school footy, break away from the stigma and help promote the culture and importance of this wonderful competition.

As I prepare for North Texas Giving Day, I think about all the important, interesting, and researched information that I can share about why the mission of Move the Runner is so passionate and relevant to me. Linda Flanagan has authored an insightful contribution to this conversation that I must share! Take Back the Game Flanagan delves into a national obsession that has done many things including reduced access to sports for low-income families. The status of #youthsports, #specialadmissions for athletes, and #collegepipelines are current issues with real implications for #firstgen families. The challenges are pervasive and until we can create reform, Move the Runner is working to provide financial and educational #extraordinaryopportunities to low- and income-restricted families to play ⚾️🥎 and apply to college.
