Today's Job Search: A Charlie Brown Moment Been actively pounding the pavement for a job and finally saw one that sparked my interest. Researched the company, confirmed it was legit, and spent time crafting the perfect application materials, ready to impress. ✨ Then, just like Lucy yanking the football away from Charlie Brown, the application portal informed me the position was closed. ♀️ Just. 🚀 Day 329 of Job Search & Embracing "Skulk" 🚀 Today marks Day 329 of my job search journey, and as we step into Day 4 of 2024, I'm embracing the WOD from Merriam-Webster as a unique word and strategy: "Skulk." 🔍 Skulk? What's That? 'Skulk' typically means to keep out of sight, often with a sinister or cowardly motive. But wait, there's a twist! In the context of a job search, I'm redefining 'Skulk' to mean strategically positioning oneself, staying observant, and ready to seize opportunities. 🌟 Applying 'Skulk' to Job Search: Stealth Observation: Like a skilled observer, keep an eye on industry trends, company updates, and job postings. Stay informed and ready to pounce on the right opportunity. Quiet Preparation: Use this time to upskill, reskill, and refine your brand. It's about being quietly formidable, ready to impress in interviews and networking. Strategic Positioning: Position yourself where opportunities are likely to arise. This statement has nothing but truth behind it. Hire people with base ability and investigate reasonable culture fit, train to keep good employees that you can mold and promote; that's how you build internal equity and sustainability (along with employee trust and loyalty).

Imagine having Thousands of people for a handful of jobs. That's the creative industry view I see and getting first hand experience with contracting similar to employment. I learned multiple things. I feel I am getting a sense of how to stand out because of how overwhelmed you become by many requests for your position. I feel some people lacked the creative direction, skills and knowledge I required. That portfolio's rarely stood out and screamed with awesomeness and amazement. The few that genuinely put in effort it felt valueable to respond too. Highlight your peaks in your career and for the business amd maintain relevance. Less is more, get an interview and win in spades ☺

Career paths right now are feeling less and less straightforward. Staying at a company for decades used to be the norm, but now switching companies and careers completely is commonplace. Despite the idea of a career path being in flux, the tenets of figuring out your direction still stay the same. What would you do if all of your LinkedIn connections were completely wiped out? And then, you had to wait until March 13,2025 until you had them all back? That's what the math looks like based on my current pace of trying to re-establish these invaluable connections. Not sure about you, but for me, who has been growing my network on this platform for more than 20 years, it's causing a whole lot of angst, frustration, and confusion. Thanks so much for the hundreds of people who sent me a connection request yesterday. Thanks to all of your support, yesterday I was able to manually add back 121 connections on my way to recovery. With a vague timeline provided to me by LinkedIn, sending me connection requests will be the most effective (albeit quite inefficient way) to help get my account back to where it was before it was "temporarily restricted". I'm immensely thankful to all of you out there who are helping me to reestablish my connections. Connections with amazing people from all over the world.
