Today, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944. On this day, Allied forces launched a massive naval attack on the beaches of Normandy, France, contributing to the eventful defeat of Nazi Germany and the end of World War Two in Europe. As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of this historic event, we also reflect on the vital role Pickfords played in supporting the war effort during the Second World War. During the war, Pickfords was more than just a removal company. Our dedicated drivers were on the front lines, transporting essential goods and ammunition to support Allied forces. One of Pickfords' most significant contributions was in the construction of the Mulberry Harbours. These temporary portable harbours were instrumental in the success of the Normandy invasion. The Mulberry Harbours facilitated the rapid offloading of cargo onto the beaches during the invasion. They overcame the logistical challenges posed by the lack of port facilities in the immediate aftermath of D-Day. These harbours consisted of floating roadways, piers, and breakwaters, enabling the continuous flow of troops, vehicles, and supplies, directly contributing to the success of ‘Operation Overlord.’ Operation Overload was the code name for the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Western Europe during the war, which began on D-Day. As we remember the courage and determination of those who fought on D-Day, we also take pride in the role that Pickfords played in this monumental chapter of history.
