Today was a big day! It’s been one year since I joined the community at the Humphrey School. I’m struck by how the wisdom of Dr. Nisha Botchwey’s words on my first day served as my North Star…”Take care of your team.” I aim to do this on a daily basis, humbled by their commitment, grace, humor, and expertise. And so grateful to be in this heart-centered, people-first space. When I was a diplomat, I would often ask myself whether a policy or activity would be in service to the American public. At the Humphrey School, our strategic plan places student success as the school’s top priority. Now my question is whether a policy or action is in service to our students. If I don’t know, I get curious and seek out their perspectives. I have much to learn, and also am so proud of what we are doing. As a faculty member shared with me in my first week, it’s a big role. It is that! And being surrounded by bright students, faculty, staff, and alumni committed to grappling with some gnarly local and global challenges makes it all worthwhile. At LEAP yesterday, Daniel Kaplan, Brian Bradford, and I discussed whether DEI efforts are still legal after the Students for Fair Admissions cases last summer: 1️⃣ Yes, you can still have DEI efforts as an employer 2️⃣ BUT, these efforts cannot discriminate based on a protected characteristic 3️⃣ So consider whether your programs comply with laws like Title VII ✔ Aim for inclusive programs: anyone interested in diversity can participate ✔ Improve/expand your pool of applicants for greater diversity in hiring ✔ Focus on your work environment to be an employer of choice ✔ Ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity for success

We believe that building stronger, smoother, accelerated pathways between K-12 education, postsecondary education, and careers is not only necessary to grow our economy, but also to address inequality in our communities. Our work leading the #AccelerateED community is central to this mission. We wanted to know, what would it take for every high school student to have the opportunity to earn college credits without the financial burden? To complete an associate degree one year after high school? To gain valuable experience and career preparation in a field of interest during high school? And while we are excited to tell you all about this work, instead we think it’s better to hear directly from the students who are most impacted by it. Here’s to a new chapter(:

Last Saturday I was shopping for wedding shoes. As the sales assistant was signing me up for a rewards program she asked me what my surname will be once I’m married. I said “Pride”! We joked about why I want to keep my name – it is a good one! More importantly, I’ve been Kathryn Pride for my whole life. I often receive messages from candidates and clients who haven’t been in touch for a few years and who want to re-engage. Occasionally old friends reconnect. I wondered what sort of value I could attribute to having this consistent identity for such a long time.   This post below gave me pause for thought for the same reason. It is straightforward to attach a value to moving jobs; a new compensation package will do that for you! Assessing the value of staying in place is less tangible, but no less valuable. I’ve been at Dartmouth Partners for just over 10 years and being at one firm for that time gives a similar sort of name recognition benefit. As I reflect on my tenure, there have been many highlights, but what stands out to me most are: * The trust that comes from working with the same team for a long time. This is so much more apparent when you’re in another country and time zone! * What you gain by staying put during the tough times. Learning from and having the opportunity to correct my mistakes. Persevering through bad markets and getting better together.   Jane Fraser talks about measuring success in decades. This one has flown by, but the change has been profound! Excited to see what the next 10 years have in store!
