A #career is an individual’s journey through life, learning and work (Hooley)
What does this mean for career education today?
Last month I attended a conference hosted by the Jubilee Centre in Birmingham on ‘character strengths for the working world’. There was one presentation in particular that has really stuck with me as I am sure I mention it to someone every single day whether that be my wonderful ex-colleague and friend, Leila Khouja Walker, people I am working with in setting up an Enterprise Academy, Emma Dickinson, Rob Tabb and the team at Liverpool CRCA, or my 21 year old son, Billy (not yet on LinkedIn 😊).
In a nutshell this is the bit that has changed my thinking around #careers and #skillseducation/ #readinessforwork … Nicki Moore challenged us to change the conversation around how we frame careers when talking with young people. We should not be asking ‘what do you want to do when you grow up?’ but rather, ‘who would you like to be?’ In this way we focus the dialogue around WHO they want to be and limiting it to WHAT they want to be. This will involve supporting children and young people on a journey of understanding their own ideals and values; giving young people more agency and fluidity to envisage and create their futures and stories.
#Careereducation most certainly should not 'sheep dipping' 🐑 Year 10s for two weeks!
I strongly encourage you to explore the Jubilee Centre’s resources on this topic: https://lnkd.in/eM8ePqdD.
