We participated in the National Read Aloud campaign last week in partnership with Start A Library Trust. This initiative aims to unite learners while fostering a love for reading, and raising climate change awareness. Our Fellows led students in our partner schools to read 'Kijiji cha Ukame' - a booklet by Hamisa Babusa that advocates for environmental conservation. The day gave students an opportunity to learn more about their role in combating climate change. Let’s keep spreading the joy of reading and the importance of literacy 📚 📖 #TeachForKenya #WorldReadAloudDay

“To put it super simply, where the Bay is going to be is going to be different. BCDC’s authority and the laws have not been changed to recognize that.” –David Lewis, Save The Bay Bay Area shoreline cities are now mandated to prepare for sea level rise, with guidance and approval from the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC). BCDC is hoping to have shoreline adaptation guidelines for cities by mid-September this year. These guidelines need to address the dire impacts of climate change. "Right now, current law and regulation doesn’t match up with an 'anticipation of where the shoreline is going to be, with sea-level rise,' Lewis said." These guidelines must support nature-based solutions like wetland restoration, address funding needs, and prioritize environmental justice for vulnerable communities. As part of our aim to promote ocean conservation and climate justice, we submitted a letter to the National Strategy for a Sustainable Ocean Economy through the U.S. Federal Register. The letter outlined some critical areas of ocean conservation, including Ocean Protection, Climate Resilience, Inclusive decision making and Education and Outreach. It is pertinent to note that if we must protect the planet, inclusivity and pragmatic steps must be taken. It is good to note that good outcomes have been yielded from this step. We appreciate the U.S. Department of State and the Federal Government for their commitment to the fight against climate change. We remain committed to combating climate change and promoting environmental conservation. #climatechange #oceanconservation #climateactionnow #usa #ghana #advocacy #impact #youth

Ellen Beth Gorman, an expert on gender-based violence (GBV), highlights the intersection between climate change, conservation efforts, and GBV. As she aptly sums up: “When working with communities on these issues, it's crucial to be aware of them, so we don't inadvertently cause harm or exacerbate existing problems.” Explore this topic further: nature.org/gbv #SafeSpacesInConservation #GenderEquity #GenderInClimate #EndGBV

Today, we observe World Environment Day, a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) initiative which is held annually on the 5th of June. The World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and has been celebrated by millions of people across the world since 1973. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and this year focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” All over the world, ecosystems are threatened. From forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, natural spaces on which humanity’s existence depends are reaching a tipping point. Surely, we cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land. Get involved! #WorldEnvironmentDay #GenerationRestoration

As #ClimateChange and conflict increase, conservationists need to better consider how they engage with migration and displacement of both human and other species. In their new report, IUCN’s Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP) underscores the need for a paradigm shift in global conservation efforts in the face of growing human and other species migration potentially fuelled by climate change, environmental degradation, and conflict.
