"Upwards of 90% of academic words in English are derived from Latin and Greek word roots. Thus, learning word roots has the potential for improving students’ learning in science, social studies, mathematics, and other disciplinary areas." —Dr. Tim Rasinski By teaching students word roots, we can open up their vocabularies significantly. Read more about how this can be achieved in Timothy Rasinski's article below. https://hubs.ly/Q02Cw3f90

🎉 Happy International Day of Mathematics! 🎉 Today people celebrate the International Day of Mathematics. It's a common belief that those inclined towards literary subjects are not inclined towards mathematics and vice versa. During my school days, despite my high marks in mathematics, I preferred literature and languages. Unlike mathematics, studying those subjects never felt burdensome or tiresome to me. What about you? Does this common belief reflect the truth? #InternationalDayofMathematics #Mathematics #Literature #Languages #Education #Sharing

Exciting article and video (shared by a fellow math teacher, which demonstrates how algebra spans many cultures and goes back a long time in various histories. From the article: The most common question I receive when teaching struggling math students is, “who invented algebra and why did they even bother?” The word “algebra” comes from the Arabic word “al-jabr,” which means “the reunion of broken parts”. This term can be traced back to a text produced by the renowned Arabic mathematician and scientist al-Khwarizmi. The history of algebra is far more complex, with contributions from practically all major civilisations throughout history. We’re going to travel through time identifying the significant developments contributed by these civilisations. https://shroudedscience.medi

Trivia Saturday! Branch of mathematics, gets its name from an Arabic word meaning “reunion of broken parts,”, and was coined in the book “The Science Of Restoring And Balancing” by the mathematician al-Kwarizmi? Hint: starts with an A, as in Arabic 😉 #MSTtutoring #education #tutoring #newjersey #njtutor #tutoring #class #school #teaching

From the Archives of Arzoo Baker Towards better understanding of concepts in Time Mathematics vs English Language --- the concept of time “Before and After” in Maths is different from “Before and After” in English Language . Quite sometime ago, I watched a young mother teaching her little daughter from the Calendar --- I was intrigued ! She was teaching her student the concept of Time from the Calendar ! TEACHING IN CONTEXT ALWAYS PRODUCES MEANINGFUL RESULT!!!! Inspired by her method, I developed this material ( for a workshop in one of suburban Schools --- and as can be seen by the date that the workshop happened a very long time ago ) The whole gamut of Time expressions is compressed in three pages of my post :---- Three documents 1. Time Expressions mis-spoken 2. Time Expressions in Every Day Speech 3. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow – The Calendar
