The housing crisis is real! The world is changing. How we live is changing. Gone are the times where living in big expansive homes that are not energy efficient are just not feasible. Costs are through the roof. If we are being honest, most people spend their time in maybe 3-4 rooms at any given time so why do we need big homes? When we downsized from 5000 sq ft to 1600 into a condo I was sure I would go crazy but yet I look back at our electricity bills, heating bills and yet we never sat in the "fancy" living room. We barely left the kitchen/family room and the extra bedrooms we just shut the door. Downsizing was an adjustment but I am so grateful. We can leave our home and head away without any worry. We have eliminated all the extra bills and transformed how we use energy. It has been a game changer. I love this model that the team LIME Architecture Inc. have created. You can have a community right on your single family lot. As someone who also cares for my aging mother, these kinds of designs allow us to think differently bringing aging parents into one of the units. Increases their ability to age in place gracefully and still have independence. As soon to be empty nesters as well this design is exciting to leverage your single family lot. The zoning is changing and we need to examine our own inherent biases towards how we live here in Canada. People do find change hard but when managed effectively (and beautifully) it can truly evolve neighborhoods. We have so much respect for Charlie Luxton and the Hook Norton project - going above and beyond for local people. Everything he says about modern housing is true, and custom and self build - like community-led housing - is a shot in the arm in terms of how we deliver homes. Our sector delivers homes that support local economies, provides a route to market for SMEs - whether they be professional services, materials suppliers or house builders, such as Federation of Master Builders members. These projects tend to sourced SMEs locally, with profits staying in these local business. We know that custom and self build delivers greener homes, with beauty at their heart, that are more accepted locally because their owners invest in these buildings far more than a large speculative housebuilder would that's looking at bottom line profit. And they stay in these homes longer, too. These homes won't, and shouldn't, replace mainstream house building, but we should have more capacity in our market to deliver small volumes in settlements across the UK, offering organic growth and housing choice that is simply not there in the market. And these shouldn't all be huge homes either - custom and self building can be affordable, and offers a solution for downsizers looking to leave large family homes but who are unable to find smaller, but well appointed homes locally - so they stay put.
