Join the conversation by watching Arts for a Better Bay Area “Housing for the Artist Workforce: Revisiting Artists’ Housing Solutions” panel. We presented alongside Artist Space Trust, Northern California Land Trust, Community Arts Stabilization Trust, and Berkeley Repertory Theatre to discuss the importance of artist housing and the solutions we are implementing to challenge this crisis.
The city’s ability to provide affordable artists’ housing and creative spaces looms as an imperative issue. The outmigration of artists continues at an alarming rate. Cities like Los Angeles, New York, Portland, OR, and Seattle have managed to grow their housing footprints with affordable properties designated specifically for artists. Which obstacles, arguments, and priorities must we tackle to advance the needle on this essential need? What organizations are currently working on this priority issue, and what resources are available now? What are our hopes for the future?
This episode features panelists Kathryn Reasoner, Executive Consultant with Vital Arts; Mark Morrisette, Facilities Director at Berkeley Repertory Theater; Joshua Simon, Senior Advisor, Community Arts Stabilization Trust; Ian Winters, Director of Incubation and Special Projects, Northern California Land Trust; Meg Shiffler, the Director of Artists Space Trust.

For arts organizations looking to increase their relevance and move closer to long-term sustainability, building community can be a powerful approach.

🔍 Here's an exploration of these principles through the lens of the arts sector.

If you want your arts organization to be relevant in today's world, you can no longer afford to present art purely for art's sake, or to cling to the exclusionary traditions of the 19th century world.
It's time to dig deeper and identify a meaningful purpose—tied to real world needs—to address through your art, and to actively make your gatherings more welcoming for your increasingly diverse community.
Your art is powerful. Wield it wisely.

Generational wealth is not flowing to museums and cultural institutions. The Art Newspaper reports that Gen-X, Millennials, and Gen-Z prioritize impact. Change matters more than status. Museums matter. Convincing next gen donors of that requires collaboration and creativity.
