I loved every minute of today's wide-ranging discussion on Climate Tech in Colorado at Denver Startup Week. Big thanks to Kirsten Suddath (Next Frontier Capital), Sally Hatcher (Buff Gold Ventures), and Danielle France (NREL) for sharing their insights with us! The panelists covered so much during the hour, but here are a few favorite takeaways: - Colorado seriously punches above its weight when it comes to the amount of climate tech startups and climate tech investment here. - It's important to understand the key data points that investors look for when they assess opportunities in software vs hardware for climate tech (hardware performance risks vs demand and retention for software customers). - The IRA has opened up a huge amount of funding via tax credits to many different types of climate tech solutions that previously didn't have access to tax credits. - The IRA has also spurred a boom in accelerators to support the growth of climate tech companies. There are several of these accelerators in the Denver/Boulder area. - There are so many opportunities for investors to make an impact with the exciting local climate tech startups here in Colorado. #denverstartupweek #climatetech

First day of NY #TechWeek has been a blast. I’m also so excited that Next Big Thing was included in the NY Guide for Climate Tech Founders, created by NYCEDC, Vita Vera Ventures, Streetlife Ventures, Segal Ventures LP, and SOSV / IndieBio, and launched at this morning’s breakfast for climate tech founders. We collectively (and urgently) need to move faster on climate issues. The guide was created to help climate tech founders navigate NY’s rich ecosystem and find the support they need to build and grow their companies faster and more successfully for people, the planet, and business. I am excited to see the buzz building for the inaugural 3rd Coast Venture Summit #ideavillage is launching with the help of a deep bench of corporate and ecosystem partners in early March. A successful venture ecosystem happens at the confluence of a robust talent pipeline, access to interesting problems, scalable customer base, and visionary capital to strategically grow the next wave of innovative companies. The “3rd Coast” - or what I often refer to as Houston through Pensacola, south of the "pull" of Atlanta - is home to a burgeoning startup community where talent, world-class resources, and numerous other factors are already coming together to build industry-leading ventures. However, the missing piece in our ecosystem has long been sufficient visionary capital to bring these talented startups to the next level, along with a regional identity that is greater than the sum of its parts. That is why we’re hosting the inaugural 3rd Coast Venture Summit this March – to invite national VCs into the room with top founders from across the Gulf South, in a targeted exercise to connect great minds, strategic resources, and - ultimately - increase venture deal flow in a unique part of the country that benefits all parties. Innovative companies that are going to win in "3rd Wave Industries" (Hat tip Steve Case) like climate-tech culture-tech and health need a different type of ecosystem to thrive. When beginning as a founder one of my biggest challenges that I never considered was... Loneliness! 💬 After speaking with several founders, it turns out this actually isn't uncommon. For the first eight months of founding Remy, I had no dedicated workspace and was either working from my bedroom or in cafes. 🛌 The problem? I didn't have a community of familiar faces around me. In cafes, I’d either feel guilty for overstaying my welcome or order a coffee every hour to offset the guilt and feel like a worthwhile customer (I quickly learnt that more coffee doesn’t = more productivity)! ☕️ The loneliness was really difficult. Consider not having regular in-person social interaction Mon-Fri for 8 months... It felt like my own version of COVID lockdown. That's why I'm thrilled to have been accepted into the bursary program Camden Collective. I'm now surrounded by a vibrant community of climate-tech founders who understand the unique challenges I face. And I now have that much-needed in-person social interaction! 🙌🏻 I never thought loneliness would be one of my biggest battles when starting this journey. But I will no longer take for granted the importance of having a community around you. P.s. I feel this photo is probably not the best when talking about all the new people I work around. 👀 #entrepreneurship #founder #community
