The redevelopment of the iconic Olympia Exhibition Centre in west London is a £1.3 billion project that will transform the complex into an ultra-modern, multi-use destination. Laing O'Rourke, and its subsidiary, Select Plant Hire partnered with Ampd Energy (a Taronga Ventures portfolio company), installing three Enertainers (battery energy storage systems) to replace the existing on-site diesel generators and help achieve their carbon reduction and energy conservation goals. “Deploying the Ampd Energy Enertainers at Olympia has been a game-changer in reducing carbon and maximising power reliability and availability at the site. Each Enertainer has removed a 500 kVA generator and all its associated emissions, noise, space and cost. As such, they represent a huge step forward in our strategy of pushing the boundaries towards ever more environmentally and financially efficient, low-carbon and innovative construction.” - Ian Fleming, Product Leader, Select Site Solutions (Laing O’Rourke subsidiary) Since their deployment, the three units have not only collectively saved 192 tonnes of carbon emissions, but also reduced operating costs by an impressive 70% of savings, partly down to what Select cites as “the flawless performance” of the Enertainer-powered cranes compared to their diesel-powered counterparts. It also estimates that the deployment of the units has removed the equivalent air pollution of around 975 cars [per year/during the same period]. It was great to be part of His Majesty's Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific Martin Kent's visit to Australia last week. Martin spent last week working alongside British High Commissioner, Vicki Treadell, and Consuls General, to meet with businesses including Taronga Ventures, state government representatives and a number of other companies to further progress the $20 billion bilateral trading relationship between the UK and Australia. We were honoured to have our Director of ESG & Sustainability, Rebecca Jinks, meet His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific, Martin Kent in Melbourne last week. Rebecca spoke with HMTC Martin Kent about AI, Data, and Quantum technologies, and the findings of the Taronga Advisory report commissioned by the UK's Department for Business and Trade to identify commercial use cases for UK expertise in those fields across Asia Pacific. They discussed the appetite and opportunities for UK technology companies, and how these will play an important role in creating trade opportunities, growth opportunities and local jobs. Certifications enable asset owners and operators to understand how they can maximize their building’s potential and how their design and operations compare against peers in the market. As user expectations of buildings continuously evolve and technology advances, certifications must evolve too. In this GRESB article by Sanjaya Ranasinghe, Global Director of R&D at WiredScore, Sanjaya explores how certifications remain relevant in a changing market. He spotlights a case study of 40 Leadenhall in London, where their SmartScore certification assessed the building's digital and smart capabilities and led to implementations of new technology and system upgrades. In addition to optimised systems, the certification enabled an accurate performance review that helped to set a benchmark for building sustainability. In 2020, Trendspek participated in our RealTechX innovation program, leading to pilots with program partners that defined new use cases and a deepening of the relationship with the investment team. Since our initial investment, the Trendspek team and revenue have more than doubled, with over 3.5 million photos processed and users in over 40 countries. This expansion has enabled rapid growth into new markets, such as the UK and US, with an alliance partner network of multinational organisations such as CBRE, Applus , SYSTRA and KBR, Inc. Xandar Kardian Inc.'s technology has potentially saved the life of a police detainee in custody, in yet another example of the solution's impact in correctional facilities. The Taronga Ventures portfolio company recently deployed its radar-based health monitoring system with the Regina Police Service in Saskatchewan, Canada to monitor the health and wellbeing of detainees. This innovative technology that detects breathing and heart rates identified a detainee in distress, enabling an immediate and potentially life-saving intervention. Critical instances like these underscore the vital role that Xandar Kardian's solutions play in enhancing safety and ensuring timely medical responses. “From the moment we integrated Xandar Kardian's radar-based sensors, we observed a transformative impact on our operations. Within the first 48 hours, the technology detected a critical, potentially life-threatening condition in one of our detainees, enabling our staff to intervene just in time. How much carbon is associated with one parcel delivery?   A study conducted by University of Melbourne and Groundfloor™ Parcel Lockers quantified the ESG benefits of one of the most popular commercial office amenities - smart parcel lockers.   Our Director of ESG & Sustainability, Rebecca Jinks, said "Increasingly, commercial offices are turning to technology to deliver sustainability benefits to their portfolio. Commercial properties are expanding their remit on sustainability to include initiatives that reduce scope 2 and 3 emissions."   Russell Thompson, professor in the Department of Infrastructure at the University of Melbourne said “Our study showed that... if parcel lockers were installed in all loading docks of commercial towers this could reduce vehicle kilometres travelled by couriers by around 50 per cent.
