Why do we celebrate Disability Pride Month? ⬇️ • To recognize and honor the progress disability activists have made • To acknowledge that there is still a long way to go in the fight for disability rights • To reflect on our own journeys • To quote disability activist Becca Wight, to celebrate “the pride in the ableism you’ve overcome” California Governor Gavin Newsom recently recognized July as Disability Pride Month! Awareness is JUST the beginning, but listening, learning, and taking action is what will bring about collective change Why else do you celebrate Disability Pride Month? 📢 July is Disability Pride Month! It includes the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act which passed on July 26, 1990 and is a time to recognize, celebrate, and honor the experiences of the disability community. 🖐 How do I do that as an ally? 👉 Being an ally could look like: - Becoming informed on local accessibility issues and advocating for change - Initiating more inclusive practices - Uplifting the voices of disabled folks sharing their experience - Learning more about the nuances of different disabilities - Breaking down your own bias and having related conversations with peers and family - Follow and engage with disability activists - Call out ableism and promote equity - And so much more! 🚨 Allyship and disability pride is not limited to one month, focus on sustainable practices that you can build on. #allyship #DisabilityPrideMonth

July is Disability Pride Month! The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a landmark civil rights law enacted on July 26, 1990, that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Its purpose is to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Disability pride is defined as “accepting and honoring each person’s uniqueness and seeing it as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity.” Disability pride month is a time to recognize the contributions, strengths, and achievements of people with disabilities, while also raising awareness about the barriers they still face. In July, we commemorate Disability Pride Month! Disability Pride Month was first recognized in 2015 by then-NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This annual observance promotes visibility and awareness of the positive pride felt by people with disabilities. The overall mission of Disability Pride Month is to help change the way people think about and define “disability,” to break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities, and to promote the belief that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can take pride. ✨ "I have autism, what's your disability" - Cameron, 321 Barista ✨ Happy Disability Pride Month! 🤩 I feel very lucky to interact with people with all types of disabilities every day, and I am better off because of it. One time I was working with one of our baristas named Cameron. If you've ever visited 321 Coffee when Cameron is working, you know you're in for a treat. She greets everyone with a smile and a rapid-fire series of questions like, “What’s your favorite boy band?”, "Who's your cartoon crush?" and “What did you name your car?”. It's AWESOME. One day, Cameron said to a customer, “I have autism, what's your disability?” I saw the customer tense up, and I was ready to step in. I saw the customer exhale and say, "You know, I'm not very good at math". Cameron, with her ever-present enthusiasm, quickly said "Well I'm great at math! If you were born in 1970, you just turned 54!" and the conversation continued. Cameron taught me so much in that moment. She showed me the value of vulnerability and the importance of genuinely connecting with others beyond the surface level. This is just one of the many examples of how you can learn so much from surrounding yourself with people who are different from you. At 321 Coffee, we celebrate people for who they are because there is so much value in diversity. When you put people from different backgrounds together, it challenges the way you think, highlights your blindspots, and offers fresh perspectives. This is what gives us the power to grow and the ability to innovate! This month is all about celebrating the experiences, achievements, and challenges of the disability community. Something that 321 absolutely loves to do (regardless of what month it is!) 🎉 So cheers to being different! #DisabilityPrideMonth #WorkplaceInclusion #Awareness #321Coffee
