In EV News 🔋... VW Europe has launched an innovative smart charging solution for EV owners, which boasts an ability to reduce charging costs by up to 40%! It optimizes charging times by leveraging periods when electricity prices are lower through market price-optimized charging and can also prioritize charging based on the availability of renewable energy, such as solar surplus. The Elli Charger 2, announced in early June, will be available for purchase in summer 2024 across 28 European markets. In addition to supporting market price-optimized charging and solar surplus charging through Volkswagen Naturstrom Flex02, the Elli Charger 2 features metering functions, cost transparency, and dynamic load management. This makes it suitable for both private and commercial use. Elli CEO Giovanni Palazzo highlighted that the charger plays a significant role in advancing e-mobility and decarbonization efforts in Europe. Since energy costs are primarily fixed in North America, there isn't a strong call for dynamic energy management. That said, we hope that the integration of renewable energy sources and smart charging in the Elli Charger 2 incentivizes similar technologies that promote a greener and more efficient energy ecosystem domestically. #EV #RenewableResources #EnergyEcosystems #Charging #EVs

This The New York Times article covers many vehicle-grid integration (#VGI) topics, from aggregating passenger #evs to provide system-wide benefits to the grid in Europe to leveraging charging management systems to overcome location-specific grid constraints at a school bus depot in the Bronx. The common theme? The Mobility House house at the center of it all!

Let this reality sink in for a moment. "Our summary report for ARENA found that our EV fleet energy storage capacity will be larger than all our form of grid energy storage by the mid 2030’s and (conservatively) nearly four times the size of all the storage needed to balance renewables in Australia’s electricity markets by 2050." Perhaps it would be wiser for governments to spend more on EV subsidies so more people can afford them as opposed to expensive infrastructure upgrades. It would also help reduce the billions in costs from the adverse health effects of ICE emission pollution. I wonder if someone has done the cost/benefit analysis on this. Instead of waiting for complex grid integration rules why can't we have EV owners convert their V2L into V2H with a separate circuit separate from the grid which acts like a back up generator and powers specific home loads. We can then start hitting the problematic duck curve a lot sooner. Michael Barnard Jon Sibley

Here is how: Today 1 Mio EV are on the streets, with an average of 60 KWh which makes 0.06 TWh of Power Storage available. In the Future we could expect around 10 Mio EV and more on the streets, which then makes 0.6 TWh or more of Power Storage on our streets. The daily Power Consumption today is around 1.5 TWh. This means theoretically we could store at least around 1/3 of our daily electric power in our cars. And if we are able to manage the grid, the cars and all the devices in a smart way, by Vehicle to Home/ to Grid/ to anything else. We have a chance to reduce our CO2 Emissions as needed.
