Very exciting science news this morning. US physicists just announced that they have successfully achieved net energy gain in a fusion reaction for the second time, replicating their landmark breakthrough from eight months ago. We’re still a long way from a reliable and self-sustaining source of fusion power that can be scaled, but this is another important step on that journey. Our joint experimental and simulation study of the photodissociation of ammonia with Nanna Holmgaard List, Elio Champenois and Todd Martinez is now out in PRL! We saw both the signature of the disappearance of one of the hydrogens and the corresponding electronic structure changes in our experimental results from ultrafast electron diffraction. Our analysis is based on comparisons with ab initio simulations of both the photodissociation dynamics and the resulting electron diffraction signatures. Accelerating towards greener science 🌪️ Last week, we signed a new agreement to make particle accelerators more sustainable with CERN. Particle accelerators are crucial for a wide range of research - from developing better batteries to discovering the fundamental building blocks of the universe - but their energy consumption can be significant. The agreement will see STFC and CERN collaborate to research and develop advanced new technologies that can bring down their environmental impact. As part of the agreement, we've outlined a proposal for a new Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Accelerators (CESA) at our Daresbury Laboratory. The new centre will conduct original research into sustainable accelerator technologies, work with industry and train accelerator scientists, technicians and engineers. With a new generation of accelerators in development - like the ISIS-II upgrade at ISIS Neutron and Muon Source and CERN's Future Circular Collider - we can seize the opportunity to build in sustainability from the start. 📃Scientific paper: On the H\alpha\ faintness of the North Polar Spur Abstract: The ratio of H$\alpha$ intensity to 1.4 GHz radio continuum intensity in the North Polar Spur \(NPS\) is measured to be $\lesssim 50$, two orders of magnitude smaller than the values of $\sim 10^4$ observed in the typical shell-type old supernova remnants, Cygnus Loop and S147. The extremely low H$\alpha$-to-radio intensity ratio favours the Galactic-Centre explosion model for NPS, which postulates a giant shock wave at a distance of several kilo parsecs in the hot and low-density Galactic halo with low hydrogen recombination rate, over the local supernova\(e\) remnant model. ;Comment: Accepted for MNRAS, 8 pages, 8 figures Discover the rest of the scientific article on es/iode ➡️https://etcse.fr/U6
