Calling all fusioneers! On May 9, you won’t need to be in Southern California to get up close and personal with our fifth-generation fusion research machine, Norman. As part of the inaugural Fusion Energy Week – U.S. Fusion Energy, we’re hosting a virtual tour of our lab! The tour will give a peek into Norman’s fusion operations and offer a closer look at our proprietary accelerator beam and power supply technology, all designed to bring hydrogen-boron fusion to the grid. Viewing will be one-time-only; sign up here to join us: https://bit.ly/3JCRdAo 💻 ⚡

Current state of fusion has six “credible” approaches to fusion by private companies with power-to-the-grid dates in early 2030s.
“We’ll have the first power plant on the grid [in the early part of the decade]. And you’ll be able to charge your phone with energy coming coming from fusion.” Bart Markus, Chairman, First Light Fusion on the future of fusion energy. #BloombergTech

For a commercially viable fusion energy plant, research, design and development is needed to create an efficient, continuously operational fuel cycle. That’s where SRNL’s expertise comes in. SRNL’s vision for the fusion fuel cycle breeds new tritium and recovers unburned tritium, purifies it, and prepares it to be fed back into the reactor, creating a safer, more efficient fuel cycle. "Fusion energy holds immense potential as a clean and abundant source of power, but a lot of work remains to be done. Engineers and scientists at SLAC are building a new state-of-the-art instrument to further our understanding of fusion energy among many other capabilities. This instrument will be coupled with LCLS, SLAC’s X-ray free-electron laser or XFEL. XFELs serve as a very high-speed camera to look at atomic interactions. Combining this X-ray laser with an instrument that can, for a brief instant, produce extremely high pressures and temperatures will allow scientists to observe and analyze the behavior of matter under extreme conditions, such as those encountered within fusion devices for clean energy. Fusion energy research has the potential to advance our understanding of this clean energy source, and will pave the way for future advancements in sustainable power generation! Video is produced by SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory where the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is located. Written & Edited by Olivier Bonin."
