The power supply in Europe is becoming "greener" every year. By 2030, the share of #cleanenergy is expected to rise to 55%, and to 88% by 2050. However, wind and solar plants do not feed into the grid constantly and evenly. This is why electricity storage systems are so important for the energy transition. They secure the power supply and the stability of the grid during "dark lulls". But there are still far too few of these systems - just 0.2% of future demand. In June 2024, over half of Britain's electricity mix came from zero-carbon sources, with wind energy supplying a quarter of Britain's electricity. The month of June had the second lowest carbon intensity in the past four years. The 12-month rolling average carbon intensity decreased by over 20% compared to the previous 12-month period and was the lowest in the last four years. The carbon intensity of electricity generation in Britain continues to fall. In June, a quarter of Britain's electricity was generated from wind, while contributions from gas significantly decreased compared to June 2023. Check out edenseven's latest insight on Britain's electricity generation.

Grid investment across Europe is not aligned with energy transition plan. In 11 countries, Portugal included, national transmission grids are falling behind 2030 national targets. Considering the time needed to set such infrastructures this is an urgent matter. Why is this not a breaking news subject?

⚠ Europe's grids risk becoming a bottleneck to the energy transition and economic growth. According to Ember's report, some of Europe's grid development plans could fall short of what's needed for #wind and solar rollout: - 19 out of 23 national grid plans examined undershoot the deployment of #solar by a total of 205 GW by 2030. - Wind is underestimated in ten out of 31 plans analysed, by a total of 17 GW.
