It’s not everyday that you stand at the top of the Salesforce tower to the sound of a conch shell being blown to ground yourself to Mother Earth - but it’s certainly memorable when you do…. … of all of the sessions I attended during #LCAW last week, the small gathering who came together to discuss what a sustainable finance plan for #AccionAndina - both a winner of the The Earthshot Prize & UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration World Flagship Site might look like, was a clear favourite. Expertly chaired by Justin Adams OBE and bringing us all some much needed inspiration from the brilliant Florent Kaiser & charismatic Constantino Aucca! This work builds on an idea a few of us including Tim Christophersen, Frank Mars Dominic Waughray Caroline Petersen Thais Corral and myself who sit on the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration had around understanding what it would take to sustainably finance one of these World Flagship Sites. Over the past few months as an Advisory Board we have been lucky enough to secure funding from #GIZ to help do just that - with the brilliant Ursula Wilmott leading a project focused on the South Atlantic Forest - which Accion Andina will also join. Why are we doing this? 1. Because the World Flagship Sites are our world’s “beacons” - they represent the most important ecosystems and habitats on earth to restore. 2. Because there is a lot of talk about “sustainable finance and nature finance” but it so often feels disconnected from real projects on the ground and from real people, who are struggling with these issues every day. 3. Because we need to understand what it would take - both in terms of $$$ but also in terms of action - to save these ecosystems if we are to have a hope of hitting key global targets such as the Global Biodiversity Framework, The Paris Agreement & the SDGs. 4. Because with the increased focus and regulation on companies to understand their nature-related impacts and dependencies, risks and opportunities - we need to be able to better articulate what this means in terms of pressures (and opportunities) for companies on some of these key ecosystems. 5. Because if we cannot work out how to save sites like these, which have both the backing of the UN, as well as the future King - with all of the brain power of the brilliant minds that we now have focused on this - then what hope do we have? Through the protection of ecological zones in the Andes and the reforestation with endemic species, the preservation and care of habitats are strengthened, contributing to the protection and well-being of the various ecosystems and the species that inhabit them.

A good example of how innovative and sustainable urban planning can combat the heat island effect and make city-living a more pleasant experience. Green corridors provide shade, cool air, and mitigate climate change impacts, while fostering biodiversity and promoting well-being. Good work, Medellín! Do you have green corridors in your city?

This is doable anywhere - in every city and urban community.
