"During my time at the IET Young Professionals Committee in 2021, where I proudly served as the apprentice representative, I had the invaluable opportunity to explore the array of benefits and resources the IET offers for apprentices. It was during this time that I came across the Engineering Technician (EngTech) registration and its significance in recognising the competence and commitment of Engineering Technicians. The encouragement and support I received from the IET staff further fuelled my interest in applying for EngTech registration, as I saw it as an ideal platform to showcase this opportunity to fellow apprentices. Being part of the committee and witnessing the impact of professional registration on engineering careers, I was also inspired to pursue EngTech to not only elevate my own professional standing but also to serve as an example to other apprentices. I wanted to show them the value of having their skills independently assessed, their credentials verified, and their dedication to continuous professional development acknowledged. By achieving EngTech status, I hope to encourage and empower fellow apprentices to strive for excellence in their engineering journeys and to consider the immense benefits that come with professional recognition. Overall, my involvement with the IET Young Professionals committee and the exposure to the EngTech registration reinforced my conviction in the importance of professional development and recognition in the engineering field. It has been a gratifying journey, and I am thrilled to have embarked on this path, ready to seize new opportunities and contribute to the advancement of the engineering profession." I used to be in banking and finance, but I wanted more of a challenge and in career prospects 👉 What do you enjoy about the apprenticeship course? I particularly like the hands-on nature of the learning process. The foundation of knowledge that we are being taught at college and at GES is symbolic. PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE FOR LONG-TERM GOAL. I have waited for 18 years for this day to come. I have dedicated all my life to achieve this.... I have always wanted to teach young people about electronic as a tool to help them to find their own path and I have to start with my son Exaucee Mbumba ( charity begins at home ) who is starting a Degree Apprenticeship in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with one of the best UK cutting edge technologies company. It was not easy to be short-listed, believe me. It was a proper degree/graduate selecting process... Going through with Exaucee, I was very shocked for the lack of quality teaching in this country in Engineering and Technology. Exaucee is very lucky to have me as a back up educator and I strongly believe he will strive in this field and I have also told him not to worry for any outcome as I am always there as his safety net. I have taught him the foundation of electronic in theory and practice: - what is a breadboard - how to hook components on breadboard - how resistor is used in circuit as current limitter and voltage drop - how to to use voltage regulator to convert 9Vdc or 12vdc to 5Vdc and drive a LED - what is a 555 timer / as Astable and mono-stable - what is a voltage level such as TTL etc... - how to use oscilloscope to visualize square wave form from 555 timer circuit - how to use multimeter and how to measure current flowing to LED and voltage across the load - what is an integrated component - what is an an integrated circuit board - difference between through hole and surface mounted electronic components - Etc... It was very amazing

Nearly ten years ago I was coaxed, somewhat reluctantly, into accepting a post as an electrical training lecturer/assessor at Wiltshire College. Despite my initial reticence I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here, but after several life changing events in both my professional and personal life I have decided to take a leap and move on to pastures new - I know, who would have guessed it! Babcock's at MOD Lyneham are the new lucky winners of my talents! I am currently feeling a little sad to be leaving, but would like to thank all those people who have supported my journey through the FE system and navigating the complexities of what you would think to be very easy and straight forward tasks but of course they never are. The word "challenging" pops up a lot. It is a privilege to teach and you have an opportunity to make a positive impact on another person's future. I always wondered whether I was the right person to set those high values and standards and have always had to challenge my own principles in order to do so. However, the journey may not be as tranquil as one might think and the students do have a vote on this subject too... The highs and lows can be a very polarising but each year I have looked back with some pride knowing that, even if in only a small way, I have inspired and elevated others and hope their future has been moulded and positively imbued in some way for the better. Within the educational environment I never really moulded very well to the stereotypical Lecturer, those who know me may well laugh at that! However, here are a couple of pearls of wisdom that I feel have served me well in my teaching journey and may help others moving forward: a. Always be yourself and genuine: it might sound odd but individuality tends to keep the students wondering what you'll do next and so they keep turning up... b. Never let the student get under your skin: protect your integrity, it is all you have. Walk away and recharge. c. Take chances: the students will surprise you. d. Mean whatever you say: don't state things that you can't back up. e. Whatever you need to do, do it today: education time is fleeting and evaporates all too easily. f. Never take anything from the student, emotionally or physically. g. Have fun and smile: its contagious.

There are just a few places left on this year's Select Partnership Scheme! Engineering professionals: you have until 10am TOMORROW (Thu 08 Feb) to register your attendance. Select is your chance to connect with undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students at the University of East Anglia. After registering, you'll receive a pack containing the students' applications and the engineering disciplines they're interested in. You can then select which students you'd like to meet for speed interviews at the Select event. You don't need to be recruiting to take part - Select is all about building connections and giving the students a chance to refine their interview skills before graduating. There's an optional preparation session next week (Tue 13 Feb, 12-1pm) where we'll provide more info about the main event and the venue. You'll also have the chance to ask any questions you may have about the Select scheme. Finally, you'll attend the main event on Wed 06 March on UEA campus. As well as meeting the students, you'll be able to network with UEA academics, technicians, and the other companies in attendance.
