For our 9th Day of Mindful Christmas we are doing charity shout outs. 🎄 A charity I got particularly connected to during my MScR is FareShare South West. As some of you may know, I spent one year of my academic career carrying out research on sustainable food systems in Bristol. Of course during that time FareShare’s work on surplus food redistribution could not go unnoticed. I was also a volunteer at the Wellspring Settlement Food Club, which partnered with this amazing charity to redistribute food to those suffering from food insecurity. Every year we waste over 3 million tonnes of perfectly good to eat food in the UK, which often has not even reached supermarket shelves before going to the bin. FareShare’s work not only helps avoiding waste, they also help individuals feel less isolated and have better diets, improving both physical and mental health. Their work inevitably helps the environment too, as for every tonne of surplus food they redistribute, they prevent 2 tonnes of CO2e and 2.66 million litres of water from being wasted. Here’s a story that highlights why we are the charity of choice for Fortune Creek: "I heard a story once that described the difference between Heaven and Hell: In Hell there was a huge table, on it was every food imaginable, and you were allowed to eat whatever you wanted, they only rule was you could not eat with your hands. People around Hells table were sad and hungry because the utensils they were forced to use we so large they could not hold it in their hands and feed themselves. So they starved. In Heaven they had the same huge table, with the same food, and the same large utensils. Similarly, you were allowed to eat whatever you wanted, provided you did not eat with your hands. But unlike Hell, they were laughing and smiling with full bellies of amazing food. How? Because rather than feed themselves, they fed each other. That’s why the utensils were so large to begin with and because they took care of each other’s needs, they flourished. The reason why we chose KGM is we believe community challenges require community solutions. The KGM is one the best initiatives to help support our growing and changing community’s needs. Sometimes, in the food insecurity world it's about shifting a perspective or a thought process. To often, we hear after the fact of "our power went out and we had to throw away (x) amount of food" "we made to much and had to toss it" "I wish we would have thought about donating" "we should have called you" We've talked a lot about how do we get companies to change their thought process from "this has to be thrown away" to "call a pantry" So, when you get a phone call about pallets of food being available. you go. When you have abundance, give in abundance. #foodrescue

The holiday season is here, a time to spread love and goodwill! During this time of year, many New Mexicans will turn to Roadrunner Food Bank to help put food on the table due to the financial burden of the holidays and the rise in food prices. In past years, we would count on the Fall food drive to gather much-needed food items and ease the increased need that occurs during the holidays. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the United States Postal Service cannot support the November food drive. Therefore, we’re asking for extra help from community members like you this holiday season. Please consider donating food items to Roadrunner Food Bank during business hours, M-F 8 AM—4 PM, and Sat 8 AM—2 PM. If you're outside Albuquerque, please consider donating food to one of our food distribution partners near you.
