What does it mean to be a woman in engineering? This is how DGL Traffic Engineer Christine Stookey, PE answered that question. “Being a woman in engineering means breaking the social norm. It means taking on the responsibility of educating girls and young women on what engineering entails and showing them that it is possible to be in the STEM field and still grow and maintain a wonderful family life.” Happy International Women in Engineering Day! #theDGLdifference #WomeninEngineering #CivilEngineering #TransportationEngineering #TrafficEngineering #StructuralEngineering #SiteAndFacilityDevelopment #ConstructionEngineering #LandSurveying

💭 Ahead of International Women in Engineering Day tomorrow, Perega Limited’s Eleana Savvidi and Monika Rogers discuss the state of play for female professionals in the structural engineering sector. "There’s no doubt progress has been made, with the number of female engineers in the UK modestly increasing since I entered the profession in 2013, said Savvidi. "However, the devil’s in the details. "While official statistics suggest the percentage of women in engineering is higher than it was years ago, according to Engineering UK, it has fallen from 16.5 per cent in 2022 to 15.7 per cent in 2023. What’s more, the long-term increase doesn’t represent all engineering and certainly doesn’t appear to be the case for civil and structural engineers." Rogers added: "With ongoing planned large infrastructure projects and other planned building schemes straining the already stretched workforce, attracting and retaining more women in engineering will offer a means to tackle the burgeoning skills shortage. If it invests in the futures of talented women, the engineering community will have access to a more diverse and versatile workforce, bringing both numbers and innovation to the sector." Today is International Women's Day 2024, it's exciting to know that our professional and personal networking sites will be flooded with posts celebrating women's vital contributions to society but on reflection, what relevance does that have to me in recruitment and Engineering? Reflecting on my journey as a recruiter who specialises in the male-dominated world of #Engineering, for me, it's about celebrating the women who are breaking barriers and reshaping inclusivity in STEM. International Women's Day serves as a reminder of the great gains we've made in achieving true gender equality, with some distance still yet to go. It's so encouraging to see the inspirational female students and talent emerging through the University of Newcastle as budding engineers. Promoting women in STEM isn't just about gender diversity, but about unlocking innovation and driving talent by embracing the value and unique perspectives and talents women bring to the table. Let's celebrate the women in #STEM and cement our commitment to creating a more equitable future. https://lnkd.in/gz7JCmzv

Jocelyn Martin, HIA Deputy Director of Policy and Industry, advocates for increased female representation in the construction sector, highlighting the expanding opportunities beyond traditional trades. Despite low overall female participation, there's a notable rise in women pursuing careers in construction, with a significant increase in female apprentices and trainees. Martin also discusses diverse roles in the industry beyond manual labour, including planners, architects, and developers. She acknowledges existing biases but believes efforts can break down barriers to female inclusion. HIA encourages celebrating pioneering women in home building and urges aspiring female professionals to explore the diverse and rewarding paths within the construction industry. It's Women in Construction week and I'm thrilled to be a part of this amazing industry! I have the best support network around me Southgate & Sarabia Architects Ltd Constructive Futures and I can honestly say that I have the best job in the world. Unfortunately, the construction industry is often misunderstood. It's not all muddy boots and dirty sites, unless you're a ground worker. We need to change how people perceive the industry. We need 1 in 5 school leavers to pursue a career in construction. With an aging workforce and a growing skills shortage, we must act fast. Furthermore, we need to address the lack of diversity in the industry. Women are underrepresented, and we need to change this. Let's celebrate Women in Construction week by recognising the amazing contributions of women in the industry. Join me in spreading the word and changing the narrative around the construction industry. Let's inspire the next generation of builders, architects, and engineers. #womeninconstruction #womeninproperty #girlscandoanything #diversity #constructionindustry #architecture

I was recently asked what the biggest challenge in my career has been. Unfortunately, my answer is the fact that I am a female. I have been dismissed by superiors, held to unachievable standards, been given unwanted and sexist advice, been teased inappropriately, and other negative experiences solely for being a female engineer. I am fortunate to work for a company that empowers me and sets me up for success. I have never been denied opportunities with nor been disrespected by CONSOR Engineers due to my gender, and I hope to continue the trend with future female engineers. The biggest advice I can give any future Civil Engineer is to find a company that empowers you and supports you for being you.
In 1980, women made up just 5% of individuals working in architecture and engineering. But how far have we come today? As of 2023, women make up 16.7% of workers in this industry. While that percentage has more than tripled since the 80s, there’s more to be done to increase that representation. And with a projected average of 21,000 openings for civil engineers each year for the next decade, we need more women to see their future in engineering! For this Women's History Month, let's take a moment to recognize the ways women have been breaking barriers and building bridges (sometimes literally) in what has historically been an industry primarily occupied by men. SCROLL for surprising stats and perspectives of a few women leaders at Consor. 🤔➡️ To the women leaders, engineers, construction managers, inspectors, and MANY other professionals who make our work possible—thank you for blazing trails for the next generation. 💪🎉 Thank you to Noelle Ziobro, Erika Schuyler, E. Gayle Grady, and Zina Schwartz for sharing your perspectives! #womenshistorymonth #womeninSTEM #womeninengineering #civilengineering Stats from Society of Women Engineers (https://lnkd.in/gaFJjQXt), US Bureau of Labor Statistics (https://lnkd.in/gQW3Eu-r) and (https://lnkd.in/g5NAUUQv), American Society for Engineering Education (https://lnkd.in/gm7RNAcJ), Center for Construction Research and Training (https://lnkd.in/e8h9fQN), and Institute for Women’s Policy Research (https://lnkd.in/g54CS-RA).
