Polluting is about to get more expensive for shippers! Starting in 2024, shippers will have to pay an estimated $3.6B in EU Carbon Border Adjustment taxes, and Maersk and other lines are already passing the costs along as surcharges to their customers. Oh, and the taxes will rise over the next few years. While today sustainability is mostly a nice to have from a financial perspective, expect rapid changes over the next few years as the climate crisis worsens and the perceived costs of inaction outweigh the loathing of taxation and other regulatory actions. The good news is, being more sustainable can actually drive profitability. There are multiple steps you can take that deliver both a profitability and planetary ROI today. And as the costs of cleaner technologies drop while the costs of polluting increase, tactics that didn't make financial sense today, will be ROI positive tomorrow. The thing is, you need to start today, so you're prepared for tomorrow and don't get left behind. The reality is that the transition to a cleaner economy is a huge economic opportunity, similar but even bigger than the transition from horses to cars.
