There was an engineering article posted a few weeks back that discussed what is important when it comes to career advancement. 1st response was: "Sometimes not getting a promotion is a promotion" Essentially, we're not fans of doing more work for the same pay, and not being compensated adequately for more responsibilities. 2nd response was to work/life balance: "Working overtime is a symptom of bad management, bad contracts, bad projects, and bad engineers... you get to a point where your subsidizing someone else's bad decision making" These are the 2 biggest reason why ACC came to exist... Stable, long term clients who needed repeat work every year, but were NOT in a growth sector being deemed negligible while poorly scoped & scheduled projects were always deemed a higher priority due to poor planning. The rat race of the consultant in a firm wore thin. ACC was established to continue serving known long-term clients and was not entered with a growth mid-set; but since establishing we've had an influx of smaller clients who feel they're being ignored by engineering firms who all have a "Bigger Is Better" mindset to the jobs they take on. I've always enjoyed working for the mom & pops, the cost conscious HOAs, the single family home site plans. Restaurant employee turnover is through the roof! Which is problematic, because we need our team far more than they need us. One of the core reasons people leave is a lack of clear expectations. My go-to solution is to give everybody a job description on their first day, clearly stating all of the details of what I expected from them as well as what they can expect from me. It doesn't have to be anything to wordy - just clear, concise & comprehensive. In fact - I'm so keen to prevent completely unnecessary turnover that I've attached my favourite template. ♻️ Please share if you know somebody who'd benefit.

This is an amazing article on dry promotions. I can not tell you how many times I have seen really good employees get bitten by this. But at the same time you usually see that employee go somewhere else and bring untold value to their new company. If you currently practice this at your company, shame on you.
