📢 FAO UEFA AND FIFA 📢 💡 I deliver you an instant reduction measure for the emissions associated with the 2032 European Championships. This joint bid should be declined. 🌍 Multi country competitions need to be a thing of the past for UEFA and FIFA. The emissions caused by the flights of 32 teams and their respective fanbase between nations is completely avoidable! ✈ No associations sustainability strategy can be taken seriously, when you have approved bids for a competition to be held across 2 countries, vs nations offering shorter travel requirements. ⚽ Fan travel makes up for 60%-70% of the carbon emissions associated with one football match alone. To actively increase this before a competition has begun is unbelievable. #worldcup #sustainability #emissionreduction https://lnkd.in/e52k_yaW

After being slammed for their bogus carbon neutrality claims about the World Cup in Qatar you'd think that FIFA might adopt a more cautious approach to the next World Cup. But no, clearly the FIFA executive feel that they haven't collected enough Air Miles recently. After all, what other reason could there be for deciding to hold a World Cup across 6 countries and 3 continents? https://lnkd.in/epbzRtvZ FIFA is woefully behind the curve. The organisation is yet to sign up to the UN Framework, Sports for Climate Action. This is despite the fact that many of its member clubs have already done so. Bristol City, for example, were attendees on my last Carbon Literacy for the sports sector course and have signed. As have Arsenal, Aberdeen, Juventus, Newcastle United and many more. https://lnkd.in/eeUftn8g Global sporting events are always going to present a massive challenge from a climate change point of view, but designing a competition where there is an entire ocean between venues is hardly showing the world that football is taking the climate crisis seriously. The news that the 2030 FIFA Football World Cup will be held in three continents shows FIFA‘s disregard for the planet and their own net zero goals. The World Cup will have opening matches in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay before moving to Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. FIFA has already had backlash due to their false and misleading claim that the Qatar World Cup was fully carbon neutral. The 2026 World Cup destinations, Mexico, USA and Canada, will also result in high associated carbon emissions due to the geographical distance that needs to be covered. This next decision once again shows FIFA putting profit and politics over people and planet. #decarbonise #climatecrisis https://lnkd.in/eXcqxnvt

Follow the Money… #Football (#Soccer) is known as “The World Game”….and #FIFA, the sport’s administrators, are know to have behaved without integrity on far to many occasions. Now we have to suffer the biggest fossil fuel company being the main sponsor of FIFA for the next couple of years, on top of that business/country (Aramco/Saudi Arabia), getting to promote their toxic products across the world leading to the next #WorldCup in their typical contrived and disingenuous manner. This is like the #Tobacco industry sponsoring a global #Swimming event. This is #Sportswashing, #Greenwashing and #Gaslighting in one toxic cocktail at a time when nearly everyone - except the #BigOil cartel and its clique of self-centred supporters - are trying to limit the main cause of the #ClimateCrisis. That main cause is scientifically proven to be the production and use of fossil fuels - which BigOil is openly stating to be ‘increasing’ Something which the fossil fuel industry have know and admitted to for decades. https://lnkd.in/gw9ugZWx “In June 2023, a Swiss regulator said that Fifa made false claims about the reduced environmental impact of the 2022 World Cup, which was held in Qatar. Following news of the Fifa deal on Thursday, campaign group Fossil Free Football said: "Saudi Aramco and the Saudi state are determined to keep the world addicted to fossil fuels. "They now get the world's biggest platform to sell their polluting products and try to clean up their image." It said Fifa "should break its ties to big polluters", adding: "Fans and players deserve better." A spokesperson for Greenpeace described it as an "own goal" for Fifa and a "brazen example of sportswashing". "Aramco is using a sport loved by billions of people around the world to distract the public from the consequences of their climate-wrecking business," the statement added.” Why is this happening?….’Follow the Money’!!
