One of our favorite days of the year! #NATIONALHIGHFIVEDAY ✋ In 2019, the University of California-Berkeley, decided to test a theory for one entire NBA basketball season. The hypothesis they were testing was this: teams who high-five more during games may be more successful. We all accept the idea that congratulating teammates is an effectively motivational tactic, so shouldn’t that theory extend to high-fives? After an in-depth analysis of basketball players, UC Berkeley found that the answer was 100% YES! The teams that consistently celebrated with high fives scored more efficiently and won more games than the average teams. Last year’s Rugby World Cup win brought South Africans a little closer together. But uniting a nation goes beyond the rugby field. I teamed up with the Avante Brandy team and EO Accelerator Cape Town to host an incredible panel discussion on a “team first” mindset. We were joined by legendary Springbok players Jean De Villiers and Joseph Dweba, with a surprise appearance by Schalk Brits, followed by a brandy tasting. There were so many takeaways and lessons on how principles from rugby can be applied to entrepreneurship: - The importance of holding each other accountable in a team. - ⁠Dealing with major setbacks. - ⁠Ensuring you listen to the people that are worth listening to and want the best for you. - ⁠Absolutely enjoying and celebrating the good times. BUT my biggest goosebumps moment was when the message came through loud and clear… It is not only the responsibility of the Springbok rugby team to unite this country. Every single South African shares in that responsibility, and we, as entrepreneurs, are in a very amazing space to make a huge impact on ensuring we drive this rainbow nation to success. ☘️ A STROKE OF GENIUS or a stroke of luck?! When you think about who would be the perfect person to guide prospects through the discovery phase in a football coaching business… …it’s Luke Chadwick! And here’s the story of how we ended up with the former Manchester United man leading our franchise recruitment. Jonny and I first met Luke at Cambridge United FC where we coached his kids and gained his involvement in the coaching programmes we were leading at the time. When Jonny left the club to join the FFF, Luke was also considering his future. Feeling despondent about the seriousness of Academy football, he was intrigued by our start-up franchise and what we stood for. Conversations about the values of coaching kids football led to Luke declaring his interest in joining Football Fun Factory as a franchisee. Little did we know when we launched our franchise business that our third Head Coach would be a Premier League winner! When the pandemic paused all operations, Luke being Luke, wanted to help and over the period where we couldn’t run our programmes he volunteered to support franchise recruitment. Jonny, Luke and I jumped on Zoom calls with football coaches as a trio and something magic happened… Lots of people wanted to join us! Once the challenge of Covid-19 passed, we were flying and it was no longer possible for Luke to lead his franchise and also continue to recruit franchisees, due to the high levels of demand. So we made him an executive director and gave him the remit of getting the Football Fun Factory to 100 Head Coaches. Four years later and we’re within touching distance of reaching this monumental goal. It’s been fantastic working alongside Luke over the past five years and the exciting part is, we’re only just getting started in terms of what can be achieved. So there we have it! Sometimes things just fall into place. It wasn’t brilliant planning that resulted in getting Luke in the right seat on the bus, it was simply fortuitous circumstances. ⭕️ THIS IS NOT FOOTBALL as your know it! One reason that our franchise business has grown so fast is because of our unique ethos when it comes to children’s football coaching. I’m a big believer that in business you have to stand out from the crowd, but what’s crazy is that the way in which we do this is so incredibly simple! Let me explain… At the FFF we place more emphasis on child development than football development, because we know that the chances of a child making it to the very top are so slim. So instead of making our sessions, serious, intense and focused on development, we focus on fun and enjoyment, and we find that this really resonates with parents. As well as our focus on fun, we also aim to teach children valuable life skills develop them as human beings. In this picture, I am holding up our ‘Safety Circles’ that we use within our training sessions to create a safe environment for the children and to teach them how to take responsibility for their possessions. This is one of many valuable life lessons that we teach. At the start of our sessions, children place everything they brought with them, such as their water bottle or jumper inside one of the ‘Safety Circles’. This gives each child the platform to take responsibility for their things and enables us to reinforce taking responsibility as a positive character trait in each and every session Over the years, we’ve had so many parents comment on how their child now takes responsibility for their belongings at school and at home, and this is one of many examples of how the Football Fun Factory champions the development of positive life skills within our programmes.
