Yesterday at Belfast International Airport, Nicolas Notebaert, announced the launch by VINCI Airports of a £100 million five-year investment plan that will increase the airport’s operational efficiency, improve passenger experience and environmental performance:  -         A new security building adjacent to the current terminal building. This ultra-modern facility will transform the passenger security experience by implementing the required Standard 3 Xray screening equipment, meaning passengers will no longer have to remove liquids or electronics from their luggage. -         Revamping of existing facilities, improve airside departure area with additional departure gates and extra seating. Shopping offering will include new catering and retail outlets and the Border Force area will also be extended over the next five years. -         Launch of a 26 MWp new solar farm on the airport site which will generate 22.4 GWh of electricity and save 12,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The farm will be developed, financed, built, and operated by VINCI Concessions’ photovoltaic subsidiary SunMind. Those improvments and our long term commitment will support Belfast International Airport’s as a key gateway for passengers, as traffic is already beyond 4,5 million passengers since January ( 22 % compared to 2022). The initiative will also have a direct positive impact for the entire region, creating an estimated 400 jobs with local construction firms for the duration of the build. Italy set to play a key role in leading the process of decarbonizing air transport. How? According to transport infrastructure group Mundys, Italy is set to play a key role in leading the process of decarbonizing air transport as part of the World Economic Forum initiative that will focus on how to transform airports into “Energy Hubs”. These hubs will be capable of producing, storing and distributing clean energy, and facilitating the large-scale deployment of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), using advanced technologies and innovative financing tools. The role of Italy’s Mundys is to act as the corporate leader to head the “Financing the Airports of Tomorrow”, the cornerstone of the initiative launched by the World Economic Forum and Airports Council International. The initiative aims to identify industrial solutions and hybrid forms of financing that can accelerate airports’ green transition and enable them to achieve net zero by 2050. The initiative has attracted the participation of some of the world’s leading intercontinental airports, including Aeroporti di Roma, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur, London Heathrow, Dubai, Hong Kong, Dallas Fort Worth. Last week, Bristol Airport won the Sustainable Airport award at the 2023 Airport Honour Awards, run by International Airport Review. Bristol Airport beat off competition from airports in three continents to take the award for its sustainability strategy, culture and ethos. 🏆 The Sustainable Airport award recognises Bristol Airport’s efforts to achieve net zero operations by 2030. The multi-million-pound investment required to make that target a reality continues, with a new 1.6mw solar array constructed on our airfield, gas being steadily removed and replaced with heating provided by air source heat pumps, and diesel vehicles being replaced with electric. Hannah Pollard, Head of Sustainability at Bristol Airport said: “We’re proud to be recognised by the International Airport review and to win this award. It supports our long-term sustainability plans and our aim to take a lead in this area. “There’s a huge amount still to do, not only as part of our plan to achieve net zero operations by 2030, but to address emissions from road transport accessing the Airport and from flights. 🌍 Sustainability is a top priority for our business, which is why we’ve set ambitious plans to reach Net Zero by 2045. As part of our journey to Net Zero, we’re performing fully electric turnarounds for Wizz Air at Budapest Airport, reducing carbon emissions from the ground handling process by around 80% per aircraft. 🎉 🔌 This has been made possible through our electric first approach, which means a growing percentage of our Ground Support Equipment (GSE) can be powered using renewable energy. Over 40% of our GSE in Europe is now electric from baggage tractors and belt loaders to passenger steps with solar panels. Really interesting panel with ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal, SA , Air France, TUI , Sustainable Aero Lab and 1PointFive at World Aviation Festival. Anthony Cottone talks about the need to invest in carbon removal now: we need a long term vision. Industries like this aren’t created overnight. This industry will be bigger than aviation, bigger than oil and gas. It will require decades to fully establish.
