🔦 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞𝗟𝗬 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 🔦 When the roof of Burton Green Primary School in York began showing signs of ageing, it was clear that a long-term solution was required. Working with Project Managers Charles Garth and Principal Contractor Castle Special Projects, Polyroof would work towards providing the best solution to refurbish the ageing roof. Once the survey was completed, a bespoke specification was written and it was recommended that the roofing areas would all benefit from a high-performance waterproofing system. In addition to this it was specified that the roof would be thermally upgraded to reduce the risk of condensation and provide lower fuel bills and energy consumption for Primary School further adding benefits to making improvements to the roof. Polyroof Approved Contractor, Liquid Roofing Limited, were chosen to undertake the work to this project. The proposed system for this project would be Polyroof Protec Warm Roof System. A modular school to be demolished after only 4 years - how many more will follow? The thing about introducing new construction methods is the first-of-class have to be showcase worthy to ensure the reputation is proven from the outset. Shoddy examples risk loss of confidence and an early demise for all future examples good and bad. Why is so little attention given to reputational integrity and the need to protect it fiercely with quality systems? This and any examples to follow are not going to help those who might have invested in modular apartments. Cladding, being on the outside of buildings, is fixable, fixing modular seems to require only a bulldozer! #mmc #modularconstruction

>Crumbling schools plagued by leaks and cold, BBC finds< We will be watching Panorama with interest tonight. 📋 Last year the National Audit Office report, “Condition of School Buildings” confirmed that around 24,000 school buildings were "beyond [their] original design life". The DfE says £5.3bn is needed each year to maintain schools in England, but it has only been allocated about £3bn by the Treasury - a massive shortfall in funding for repairs. 🏫 We have been aware of the poor state of our school estate for many years and our RMI specialist Ian Dryden has provided advice and support to architects via Architecture Today seminars and supporting academies and trusts via our ‘Fix My School Roof’ service. ⏳ If there is anything positive to come from tonight’s bad news it is that finding and dealing with roofing issues early can save much greater costs in the future. This is where SIG Design and Technology’s Planned Maintenance Report can help you stay ahead. ✅ We’ve a long-standing proven track record of helping trusts and stand-alone academies to apply for funding and make their budgets go further. 📞 Get in touch with us if you think we can help. 👉 Watch Panorama tonight: Britain’s Crumbling Schools https://lnkd.in/eZXaFgck 👉 Read the NAO Report: Condition of School Buildings: https://lnkd.in/dRCBGP3r 👉 Watch Ian Dryden speak on Fragile Deck Replacement at the recent AT seminar last autumn: https://lnkd.in/eAVU3Ruf #roofing #maintenance #schools https://lnkd.in/e7mvNxeE

Did you know buildings on colleges and universities are often considered business or assembly occupancies? And that this subjects them to slightly different codes and standards than K-12? Or that the Department of Justice has found that business occupancies saw approximately one-third of reported active shooter events? This means expanding the codes to include security considerations for multiple occupancy types has the potential to protect more lives. This Building Design Construction Media blog from Devin Bowman talks about what aspects of safer school design can be transferrable to several occupancies: https://lnkd.in/gwhNd9w4

🏢 Embracing Innovation: Shipping Containers Transformed into Student Apartments! 🚢🏠 As the demand for student housing continues to surge, universities are turning to innovative solutions to address the shortage. 🏫🌆 The shortage of available student accommodations has sparked a wave of creativity, leading to an unexpected trend - the transformation of shipping containers into stylish and functional apartments! 📦✨ In a bid to provide affordable and sustainable housing options, universities are partnering with architects and designers to repurpose shipping containers into modern living spaces. These repurposed containers are being ingeniously redesigned, featuring all the amenities students need for a comfortable stay, including bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and study areas. 🛏️🍽️🚿 What was once seen as merely a transportation vessel has now become a symbol of adaptability and eco-friendliness. The containers' modular nature allows for quick assembly and customization, making them a perfect solution for accommodating more students in a shorter time frame. ♻️⏰ Students are enthusiastic about the new trend, appreciating the unique aesthetics and the opportunity to live in a space that showcases sustainability. The shipping container apartments are often designed with an emphasis on green practices, incorporating solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, and water-saving fixtures. 🌱☀️💧 While the idea of living in a shipping container may sound unconventional, these repurposed units are proving that innovation knows no bounds. With universities leading the way, it's exciting to see how creativity and sustainability are coming together to reshape the student housing landscape. 🏢🌍 #StudentHousingInnovation #ContainerLiving

I’ve not read the technical report but if the headline is true this will have huge implications for the construction industry. I’ve not been convinced on any of the modularised units I’ve inspected on sites over the past 9 years. Call me old fashioned but I love solid bricks & blocks. Do it once & do it right as opposed to throwing up poor quality, non robust building with poor performance & a short lifespan. #construction #modernmethodsofconstruction #sustainability

Summer Sprint for School Construction is On for Erickson-Hall CONSTRUCTION: Escondido Co. Thrives in Niche Industry BY RAY HUARD ESCONDIDO – Erickson-Hall Construction Company is in the midst of what company President Mat Gates calls a summer sprint of school construction projects in Southern California, including two in San Diego County. “We’re pushing upwards of about $100 million of work,” Gates said. Since its founding in 1998 with a staff of four, the employee-owned company has grown to have 212 employees and has become a powerhouse in school construction from new buildings to renovations. “Doing schools is a niche industry. The requirements in California are extensive, and we’ve been a school builder since the very beginning and we were building schools with other companies as we were coming up through the trades,” Gates said. Of the $3.5 billion in construction projects that Erickson-Hall has completed, $3 billion has been for K-12 and higher education projects. Gates said that 30% to 35% of the company’s annual revenue comes from school projects that it does during the summer. This summer, the company has seven school projects under way, including nearly $30 million of work at Albert Einstein Academy Charter School for San Diego Unified School District and a $9 million library modernization project at Eastlake High School for the Sweetwater Union High School District. The Eastlake work is particularly challenging because it has to be done quickly, Gates said. “We’ve got about six, seven weeks to get it done,” Gates said. “We’re basically stripping the library and rebuilding it, leaving the frame intact, (adding) new technology, new infrastructure, and redoing the shelving and putting it back together.” At Albert Einstein Academy, Erickson-Hall plans to complete about $8 million to $9 million of work on the overall $30 million project that Gates said would take a year to complete. “Basically, we’re prepping for a new building,” Gates said, “putting in the site work while the kids are gone.” https://lnkd.in/eyn9EjPU #construction #commercialrealestate #development #schools #building

Learning environments play a crucial role in student success, which is why the Elizabeth Woodville School called on us for a transformation. Research indicates that various elements can impact someone's learning capabilities. Distractions, such as ambient lighting and temperatures, can easily prevent students from staying engaged and absorbing the information during classes. The Elizabeth Woodville School in Northamptonshire is an inclusive comprehensive school located across two sites, which are used interchangeably by the staff and students. Their north campus is a 1960s building which had retained its original single critall windows. Unfortunately, they were noted to be in poor condition, which was leading to little insulation in the winter months and challenging to open in the spring and summer months. They were having a negative impact on the learning environment, and the school wanted to change this. ECP provided full end-to-end support to the school, with a transformational end result. From successfully applying and securing CIF funding to enable the replacement of windows and doors to a large portion of the buildings, we also undertook the design, specification, construction management and project management throughout the whole process.
