When you give birth to a new company and realize a dream, you seek early reassurance that you’re on the right track. And every sign of recognition is a form of validation. So, to receive news that our BlueOnion brand has been recognized at the 2024 Hong Kong Design Association Brand Design Awards with the Grand Award of the Year is undoubtedly lovely to wake up to. The awards have been forthcoming since we launched a couple of years ago. Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Green Fin Tech ‘Sustainable & Green Finance’ award top 3 finalists, Hong Kong ICT award for Applied Solutions in Fintech’s second runner up, and IFTA Fintech & Innovation Diamond award for ESG Initiative of the Year, among others. It speaks of uniqueness, aesthetic value, marketability, innovation, and sustainability. However, while it’s nice to get the recognition, I do not lose sight of the fact that this accolade refers to our brand image. What’s more important is our purpose. BlueOnion has been established to help companies and financial services providers understand and adopt financially and socially responsible strategies, striving for higher transparency, better stewardship, and tackling greenwashing risks. With an investment world often murky, with limited clarity regarding the sustainability of investments, we see companies falling foul of this daily. We’re proud of these awards, of course, but we’re here to help champion responsible investing, and the best recognition of all will be when we start to see real change. "Access to Finance" is not about everyone/every project receiving funding. It is about correctly identifying business/project risk and having available correct financial instruments to address them. In climate tech we see higher risks not readily covered by current financial instruments (= market failure): 1. With new green technologies we need to run faster than technology development timelines in the past (= higher technology risk) and 2. build out more hardware and real-world assets (we cannot fight climate change with software only). So in the fight against climate change new financial instruments can help.
