We're Gonna Make It - Clean Methanol Gains Momentum As A Shipping Fuel Of The Near-Future With so many low-carbon, carbon-neutral and carbon-negative shipping fuels being touted as the next big thing, it can be hard to determine which are for real and which are mostly hype. Some folks have been talking up LNG, biofuels, clean ammonia, fuel cells ... the list goes on and on. One way to separate the most promising prospects from the also-rans is to keep track of where big shipping companies are placing their bets — and how they’re hedging those wagers, just in case it takes longer than expected to develop fuel-production facilities. Clean methanol in particular is showing signs that it may be one of the frontrunners on both the supply and the demand sides, with an increasing number of firm orders being placed for massive container ships and other vessels that can be fueled by either methanol or low-sulfur fuel oil (LSFO) — there’s the hedge — and a number of new clean methanol production facilities being planned in the U.S. and overseas. (But still, a healthy dose of skepticism about it all is warranted.) In today’s RBN blog, we discuss recent developments in the clean methanol space. https://bit.ly/3DRBSci #methanol #efuel #energy #sustainable #energytransition #futurefuel #cleanfuel #alternativefuel #marine #maritime

Considering the typical lifecycle emissions for existing internal combustion vehicles is very important. With tailpipe emissions accounting for more than 65 per cent of total lifetime emissions of current ICE vehicles, the need to reduce those emissions in current and interim fleet plans prior to the full penetration of zero-emission vehicles is paramount. Biofuels, biodiesel, and other clean fuels provide an immediate solution for achieving meaningful emissions reductions for Canada’s existing on-road fleet. Pressure on UK renewable transport fuel certificate (RTFC) prices sparked one of the most active trade periods last week. This suggests that non-crop ticket values for the 2023 and 2024 compliance years have converged. A slew of trades had been heard for 2024 non crop tickets through the end of last week and beginning of this (Monday, November 6), with all heard traded at 15.5 pound sterlings per certificate, before trading also picked up on 2023 tickets – at the same price level. Sources ascribed the buying to different dynamics, with 2023 buying potentially driven by the relatively cheap price of single-count biofuels earlier in the obligation period, rather than the more impactful use of double-counted waste-based feedstocks. From climate preservation to economic independence, the development and widespread use of biofuels within the EU can support what matters to its citizens – but not without the support of policymakers. EBB European Biodiesel Board’s manifesto outlines how the next EU Commission can help: [1] Recognize the importance of crop-based biodiesel in a “Protein Strategy,” providing a long-term perspective for farmers and producers. [2] Shift the demand from fossil diesel toward renewable biodiesel as legacy and new transport fleets will continue to use liquid fuels through 2050. [3] Protect the EU biodiesel industry from unfair competition and fraud from outside the bloc. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eRMsc27g #biodiesel #netzero #transport #EUtrade #ad

A chat in the House about the HVO fuels.... there is a #biomass strategy coming up, that will focus on - "It is important to ensure that biomass is prioritised within the economy where it offers the greatest opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in ‘hard to abate’ sectors where there are fewer options to decarbonise through alternative low carbon technologies." Interesting that in the chat they actually included Non Road Mobile Machinery. #transportrefrigeration #transport #coldchain #diesel #hvo
