This meeting of Multilingual Education Thinktank (MLET) was dedicated to Kymbat Yessenbekova's case study on English as a Medium of Instruction in Kazakhstani Higher Education. If you're interested in reading more, please find her article in Language Planning. Some of my takeaways: * Research Focus: How teachers and students perceive EMI as challenging. * Findings: * Rigid EMI Understanding: Apprehension among students and teachers. * Policy Mismatch: Discrepancy between policy articulation and enactment. * Increased Teacher Workload: Additional responsibilities without extra time. * Translanguaging Beliefs: Viewed as a deficit by some, while others demonstrated a positive stance due to pedagogical benefits and student demographics. * Supportive Practices: Affective/emotional support combined with translanguaging pedagogy are helpful. * Ideological Conflicts/dilemmas: Monoglossic/conflicting ideologies vs. heteroglossic practices. * Benefits of EMI: Recognized for enhancing socioeconomic and political status. * Implications: * Address teacher workload and support. * Promote positive views of translanguaging. * Align language policy with practice. Thank you, Kymbat, for sharing your research, and to all the participants for the meaningful discussion. Looking forward to seeing you at the next MLET meeting. https://lnkd.in/eVk-EBeE

The recent announcement from the #MinistryofEducationEthiopia regarding the prohibition of learning English as a subject and using it as a medium of instruction at pre-primary school for other subjects is concerning. While it's crucial for children to learn academic content in their native languages, it's undeniable that proficiency in English is essential for global competence. This decision could hinder our children's ability to compete effectively on the global stage. We urge the Ministry to reconsider this policy before its implementation. It's vital that our education system equips our children with the language skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive world. #Education #LanguageLearning #GlobalCompetence #EthiopiaMinistryofEducation

While protecting French language and culture in Quebec is an understandable goal, imposing steep tuition hikes and restrictive language requirements on out-of-province students could have detrimental unintended consequences. Such measures may limit accessibility and diversity within Quebec's universities rather than preserve them as inclusive institutions of academic excellence. With English-language university programs like McGill University, already under threat of funding cuts and closures in the province, further targeting these institutions and their students may be perceived as discriminatory overreach. Seeking to elevate French should not come at the cost of dismantling vibrant anglophone university communities. A more balanced approach could include providing world-class French immersion and ESL support to non-Francophone students instead of punitive language mandates. Addressing any funding shortfalls across Quebec universities may also ease the perceived need for disproportionate tuition increases on outside students specifically.
