One week now since the Free Flow Conference took place🌊. As a whole it is an experience that enriches your profesional but also personal development. Here a few things to highlight that are not much outspoken but deserve recognition: - The venue was full of art pieces designed by students🐟. From hanging crafted fishes, to sculptures at each room representing the room name (I.e. otter, sturgeon, free flow, etc), to interactive performances such as taking down a river barrier. This not only raises awareness but promotes the creativity of the youngest. It also tells that this is not a 3 days conference for the experts, it is a movement where everyone can take part. - All the food was served meat free with I would say 50%vegan🥪. For over 400 people. This really promotes sustainability and inclusion and it makes you think that these two factors can not only be incentivated by individuals but big organisations can also have a great contribution. Let alone that if you are organising a big event this will save you a headache. The food was delicious, easy to grab and eat while networking. A few people took more than one portion (including me) and I’m sure many people didn’t noticed the lack of meat. - This event organised 1 minute pitches from the sponsors🎤. Not often you get the opportunity of presenting in front of a big audience and this is a great chance to break the ice. My advice: if you have the opportunity, take it. How can cities be transformed to restore biodiversity and improve human well-being through Nature-based solutions (NbS)? 🏙 🌳 The transformative change of cities are vital to our natural environment. This is why the biodiverse cities project has set out to implement Nature-based solutions across several cities in the north sea region with several important purposes. ·         Halt biodiversity loss ·         Build resilience toward climate change ·         Support ecosystem services ·         Promote nature inclusive cities and societies Nature-based solutions provide important Ecosystem-services with important effects for both people and nature, including Flood & drought control, Water purification, Heat stress mitigation and Nutrient cycling 🌍 . Therefore, NbS can provide several critical benefits for our nature, for our wellbeing and for our ability to withstand climate change. My team was hosting a stall where we are running live demos on EcoCommons Australia - our digital innovation platform which gives you access to curated environmental, climate and biodiversity data and easy-to-use ecological models in a point-and-click interface, so you can run your species distribution models and climate change projections. I loved Hugh Possingham's acknowledgement of country and his statement that some 500 years ago, everyone living in Australia was a birdwatcher and had a deep appreciation of nature. How do we bring this back? Geoffrey Heard told us the impressive story of making the Australian #ThreatenedSpeciesIndex, how it has grown, why it's important and how to contribute! Thanks for the shout out to my colleagues Micha Jackson, Ayesha Tulloch who together with me laid the foundation (2016-2020) for what the TSX has become from 2021 onwards! I was delighted to hear that it has become one of Australia's main wellbeing performance indicators. Kristen Williams from CSIRO showed us a novel approach using community-level modelling (generalised dissimilarity modelling) to calculate the impacts of climate change on a composition of species. Nicolas Rakotopare taught us how to improve #sciencecommunication for large research organisations: 1. Find the story - there's a story for every project 2. Find faces to the people doing the work 3. Start compiling a database of photo and video assets early - this material is critical to bring your story to the people And of course a lot of mingling and making new friends!

Have you heard of Nature-Based Enterprises (NBE)? 🧐 What is the role of NBE in delivering NBS?🤔 Nature-based enterprises are not a new phenomenon and yet there is still little recognition of such a concept. 🌿 👉 In simple terms NBE are businesses and organisations working with and for nature in the delivery of nature-based solutions to address climate change and biodiversity challenges. 👉They can have different forms, including social enterprises, as they are often driven by both an environmental and a social mission. Collaboration of two new light pollution projects! PLAN-B Project and AquaPLAN are two recently initiated Horizon Europe projects. PLAN-B focusses on terrestrial and AquaPLAN on the protection of aquatic biodiversity and ecosystems from the impacts of light and noise pollution, with a planned duration of four years.
