The 2023 #worldaidsday theme "Let Communities Lead" emphasizes the power of communities to drive positive change in the response to HIV/AIDS. It recognizes the diverse strengths they bring to the table and highlights the importance of fostering partnerships that empower and amplify the voices of those most affected by the epidemic. This theme directly aligns with our community led efforts and approach towards prevention and response of HIV/AIDs under the West Nile HIV project that we have been jointly implementing with Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) with the financial support of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 2021

If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS, which makes it difficult for the body to fight off infections and diseases. Some of the symptoms of HIV are: Fever Fatigue Swollen lymph nodes Night sweats Muscle aches Sore throat Skin rash Together, we can make a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. 🔬 Exploring the Role of the HIV Ab/Ag Test 1️⃣ Detecting HIV infection early is crucial for timely intervention and treatment. The Ab/Ag test helps identify both viral antigens and antibodies, providing a comprehensive view of the infection status. 2️⃣ With rapid test options available, the Ab/Ag test offers convenience and accessibility, particularly in community-based settings and resource-limited areas where timely diagnosis is essential. Let's continue to raise awareness about the importance of HIV testing and empower individuals to take control of their health. Together, we can make strides in ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic. 💪 #HIVTest #EarlyDetection #PublicHealth #EndAIDSGlobal #HealthcareAwareness

Today, on the 1st of December, is World AIDS Day. WHO, together with communities and partners will commemorate World AIDS Day 2023, under the theme “Let communities lead”. The world can end AIDS with communities leading the way. That is why the theme for World AIDS Day this year is ‘Let communities lead’, and much more than a celebration of the achievements of communities, it is a call to action to enable and support communities in their leadership roles. HIV remains a major global public health issue, having claimed 40.4 million lives so far with ongoing transmission in all countries globally. There were an estimated 39.0 million people living with HIV at the end of 2022, two thirds of whom are in the WHO African Region. There is no cure for HIV infection. However, with access to effective HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care HIV infection has become a manageable chronic health condition, enabling people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives. Every 1st of December, the world raises global attention on HIV/AIDS to draw the attention on the need to support global drive to eliminate HIV by 2030. This year, the spotlight is on empowering the community of persons living with HIV/AIDS to directly lead the elimination drive. HIV shares similar mode of transmission with viral hepatitis B, C and D, as well as systems for elimination. Hence, empowering both communities will help the world quickly achieve elimination.
