"That was fellow-level research, Destiny, congratulations!" Dr. Abigail M. Ramseyer, DO And that's a wrap! Over two years of research have led to this morning's opportunity to present at the Sparrow Health System's Grand Rounds! It was such an honour to be invited by Stephanie Fleming, Chair, Dept of Ob/Gyn Sparrow Hospital, following my presentation at the #HEALSexualHealthConference2024 at Michigan State University! My research on the overutilisation of emergency services is multifold; 1. Identifying patients seen in Michigan hospital systems (Urban, 100000 populations) 2. Determine overutlisation status based on ICD-10 codes, provider discharge summary, and patient recommendations. Encourage survey participation. 3. Provide educational interventions (video, brochure, poster) and send out retake attempts to survey participants following a 30-day period. This research not only highlights significant levels of overutilisation in Michigan but also which education interventions and resources are most effective in developing informed decision-making from our patients, thus relieving the burden on our emergency staff and providers. Have you heard of the Office of HOPE (Health Outreach, Policy, & Education)? The Missouri Telehealth Network and Show-Me ECHO are proud to be a part of this growing collaborative partnership. The development of the backbone organization office of Health Outreach Policy and Education (HOPE) brings together the interprofessional expertise of five units (including the Missouri Telehealth Network and Show-Me ECHO!) with a common agenda to advance mutually reinforcing activities. Academic medical centers and university extension programs remain underdeveloped collaborators, despite the complementary objectives between translational science and extension. This case study details the creation of a nationally unique interprofessional organizational structure between the University of Missouri (MU) Office of Extension and Engagement (MU Extension) and the MU School of Medicine to accelerate statewide reach of research and education discoveries using high-touch community health approaches. HOPE is poised to make significant contributions to amplify MU’s land grant mission, garner additional grant funding, and advance the health of Missourians. The first EM program in the US is set wind down in South Texas (referenced in the comments section of this post) as the landscape of health care system design and delivery evolves under the pressures of SARS-CoV-2. Decreasing fiscal margins coupled to the uncertainty of academic-clinicial affiliations drive this change. Addressing physician supply must now be designed under the auspices of a triad of community, academic, and clinical stakeholder engagement. Projecting needs based on the social determinants of health is no longer a post hoc analysis but a real time indicator of evolving educational paradigms.
