There arenโt many leaders that I respect more than Best Buyโs Senior Executive Vice President, Kamy Scarlett. Sheโs brilliant, fun, warm, supportive, and has a way to cut through BS without having to wear a rebellious Sons of Anarchy leather vest to do it. She leads with her authentic personality and embraces and celebrates the individual personalities of her team. Kamy knows that being a front-line associate in a retail environment is a tough gig with long hours, disrespectful customers, and tons of direction from head office. Beyond product knowledge, they have to know specials, offers, and have a photographic memory of the binder that outlines the 5000 guidelines that dictate everything from how to bag a box to 60-day return policies. Kamyโs plan was simple. She simply went to her frontline staff and told them to forget all of that. There was only one direction they needed to understand and to put into practice: โBe Amazingโ. Thatโs it. Be amazing. Kamy hired her people based on beliefs and values and expected them to be amazing at their jobs but she tossed away the script and let them deliver โAMAZINGโ in their own authentic way. Itโs simpler, itโs easier to commit to memory, and itโs way more fulfilling which creates a much better experience for the customers AND the staff. When you inspire your people to be amazing, they will be.

Yesterday, the entire company took part in conversation around Smithbucklin's new values, what they mean, how they are applied, and what they can unlock for us with intentional practice. As someone who is values-driven and prioritizes company culture in any job, I was impressed. Every single value struck a chord with me and related beautifully with each other; together they weave a web of the skills and attitudes that yield success. Two things became clear throughout the day: 1. Smithbucklin did the leg work to distill these values from employee input. I can hear the voices of so many of my colleagues in each definition. ๐ My Core Value!!๐ In my initial weeks at BALLY, I was tasked with distilling my core values onto paper and pinning them to a special board in our BOH, alongside the values of my esteemed colleagues. Reflecting deeply, I identified the following as my guiding principles: 1. Adaptability 2. Resourcefulness 3. Teamwork 4. Sharing knowledge 5. Curiosity Initially, I perceived this exercise as a means to understand my team better. Yet, over time, I unearthed a deeper purpose โ a reminder of our authentic selves and unwavering values. Our core beliefs can waver amidst lifeโs challenges, environmental factors, and mental states. But revisiting these values serves as a grounding force, empowering us to stand firm in the face of adversity. Today marks my third year anniversary with Turn 14 Distribution, Inc.! Reflecting on the past three years, It's hard to believe how fast the time has gone; most days I walk in feeling like I just started yesterday. When I first came here, I thought I knew a lot more about - well, everything - than I actually did. In looking back at all the things I've learned and accomplished, I can only attribute these successes to the support from all of the lovely people here (not just in the HR department) and the culture that Turn 14 Distribution has built. Usually in interviews, I describe this as a 'learning' environment; a culture defined not by shaming mistakes, but by using them as opportunities to improve and reach higher. It's also an environment that takes the time to do and build things the right way, not frivolously jumping into things to say we do them. Ultimately though, it's the entrepreneurial spirit that makes this such a special place to be. From entry-level to senior leadership, it's a culture of innovators looking to build the best experience/product/process that they can so every team and business partner can benefit. Here's looking forward to the next few years!

It's #familybusiness week, and family businesses hold a special place in my heart โค๏ธ how cool (most of the time) to be able to work so closely with those you love most - it's been a real privilege to work with Simon Preston these last 8 years. Shout out to the fab Family Businesses RISE Beyond have worked with over the years Bruntwood, Graham & Brown, Toly Products, Scan Computers, Corinthia Hotels Limited, Warburtons, etc. I've been thinking about what I love about these types of organisations: ๐ญ Long-Term Mindset - which means they typically more sustainably invest in people, services and products without the interfering pressure of short-term returns ๐ Strong Cultures - Whilst there's always the politics and drama they tend to have really strong cultures of people that care, and that feel cared for โจ Clear Purpose - Whilst the products and services can shift over the generations, the purpose always shines through ๐จ๐ฉ๐ง๐ฆ Customer Focussed - Often with humble beginnings and local community customers, even with scale this stays core to their work.
