Are you constantly getting calls and emails from graduate students desperately seeking practicum sites to start their hours? I’ve been in that situation countless times, offering guidance but realizing that the availability of sites falls short for many students striving to complete their degrees. It's heartbreaking to see their disappointment when they learn that slots are often filled a year in advance, a reality they might not have anticipated. This ongoing issue made me think about how I could help more practice owners start welcoming graduate students into their practices. When I first began, I reached out to experienced colleagues and dove into building my systems, refining my skills along the way. Now, I want to share a shortcut with you. I’ve created a practical checklist to help you start accepting graduate students into your practice smoothly and effectively. Ready to make a difference in the lives of these students and enrich your practice? Download the checklist now and take the first step toward mentoring the next generation of therapists! Day in the life of tackling global issues and serving one-on-one Yesterday, September 28, 2023, I had a day that reflects much of my work these days in trying to tackle both the one-on-one issues that cropped up in our daily work, and thinking about where my energy needs to go for systemic changes. First came what seemed to me a personal problem: the disappointment of not being able to be at our president’s global townhall in person at 8 a.m. because I have a workshop for students in Asia about our new Environmental Health and Safety program (https://lnkd.in/ep77Jein) at 6:30 a.m. (7:30 p.m. in Japan and Korea) and a typical one hours commute at 6 a.m. That problem was easily addressed by me being wide awake at 4:30 a.m. and commuting into Adelphi, MD at 5 a.m. to make both the virtual workshop and the in-person option for the townhall. My workshop was quality one-on-one time with our students in Asia as I had conversations with each of the three student who hopped on prior to our 6:30 a.m. (7:30 p.m. their time) start and provided chances to address questions throughout the workshop. Two of the three students were ready to sign onto our new Environmental Health and Safety program by 7:15 a.m. Maryland time. The chance to bump into people at work, from checking in with Sydney who has been fasting to hallway conversation with our Chief Academic Officer on the need to be agile within our new procedures, as well as meeting people in person for a townhall for the first time since pre-pandemic, made the 5 a.m. commute more than worthwhile. Interviewing new faculty and experimenting with ways to engage students online are meetings I participate in to provide data and insights on how we can work together to increase focus time that is needed for connections and insights, in both individual work and teamwork. Always a part of my team’s day is to resolve student issues one-on-one. Placing students back into the classroom that were dropped by misinformation in our system, supporting students to get back on track with their course or program, etc. How do we help each other get back up from the daily barriers and think about the larger issues we have today to be responsive to each other and focus on systemic changes needed to build a better society?

Ten years ago today, I turned in my classroom keys. Five years ago today, I started my career at Empath Health. I tend to think of my career in eras (#swiftie) - my teaching era, my lobbying era, my healthcare era. In each era, I've fallen madly in love with my work: the passion, the purpose, the people. It was all-consuming, I worked insane hours, and I couldn't see a world beyond the one I was so deeply entrenched in. Enter: Empath Health. In five years, I've held four jobs, led three teams, and supported two visionary CEOs who constantly challenge me to look ahead, beyond what is currently possible and into the future we're building: one of Full Life Care for All. The biggest thing I've learned in my five years at Empath is that Full Life Care for All has to include Full Life Care for me. Taking the PTO. Trusting my teammates. Working from home in yoga pants. Cutting out early on days my niece has a school play. And building a culture that empowers others to do the same. Looking at teacher-era Renée in that photo, I want to tell her that while our career is beautiful part of our life's work, it isn't the most important part. That we'll have to learn some boundaries, because the most empathetic people are the ones with the strongest boundaries. And that it's going to be a really hard lesson but once we learn that, we start taking solo European vacations that are so, so worth it ;)
