It was wonderful to gather with colleagues and peers at the National Press Club this morning to launch the inaugural State Opportunity Index from Strada Education Foundation, which rates - not ranks! - states based on five metrics focused on bridging the connection between education and economic opportunity. Three things I love about this report: 1) It rates each state on a scale of Foundational to Leading for each of the five key metrics, rather than ranks state performance from 1 - 50. 2) No state is Leading in all five metrics and no state is Foundational in all five metrics. Each state has its own strengths to share with the field as well as opportunities for growth. 3) The vast appendices facilitate this state-by-state comparison so that states can more easily learn from and collaborate with one another. I'm particularly proud of my colleagues Nichole Torpey-Saboe, PhD and David Clayton who have spearheaded this work, which is informed by and will continue to serve the field as we all work towards fulfilling the promise of higher education in this country.

Great research provided by @Stradaeducation. We thoroughly agree that we should, “Provide students, families, and other stakeholders with accessible education and employment data that can inform decision making and assure quality and value.” Students need better information about the value of what they have learned in their classrooms and how to signal that learning in terms of skills for the employers.
