The world's largest safety net for children? School meals. 🍽Keeping children in school and out of work and early marriage, they can be targeted at the most vulnerable and let's not forget - well-fed brains learn better. 🧠 At today's School Meals Coalition Ministerial Meeting in Paris, World Vision urges governments to strengthen their commitment to school meal programmes ✍️ and call upon donors to increase their support for nutritious school meals, particularly in regions facing conflict and crises. #ENOUGH https://lnkd.in/eJAQvNZn

Concerning research below on the impact of the #costofliving on families & the role schools are playing in supporting families: -70 percent are providing food to pupils, through food parcels vouchers, subsidised breakfasts and via food banks. - 84 percent say the cost-of-living crisis has increased the number of pupils in their school needing additional support. - Almost nine in 10 schools are having to provide uniforms and clothing to pupils due to the impact of inflation on families. - A similar proportion are subsiding extracurricular activities for pupils The government is being called on by researchers to extend the eligibility for #freeschoolmeals to take into account the increase in families struggling financially. At Future Foundations we have launched CanTeam to equip schools to offer #afterschoolfood to young people & their families. As a finalist of the Big Education Challenge and with the support of Big Change & The Young Foundation we are piloting CanTeam in schools this term & launching a nationwide survey with Play Verto to identify the need and demand for CanTeam in schools, and the level of interest from young people, their families and schools - this we believe could be a gamechanger in providing families with access to affordable and nutritious food. With Jim Ritchie-Dunham we are designing our pilots to measure our wider impact on #humanflourishing, as we believe we need a new way to access food - and by eating together, we can #thrive. Schools are taking on a bigger role in society by default, and we believe - they need much more support to respond to the growing needs in society and there needs to be better more sustainable solutions to tackle the issues. I do not think we can leave this to the government to solve, so whilst the researcher's call to action is right, we believe a coordinated cross-sector approach is needed If you would like to find out more about #CanTeam and take part in our consultation please do comment or get in touch, and watch this space for further details on our plans. https://lnkd.in/ern8cYjZ #bigedchallenge #bigchangers

We're supporting the charity School Food Matters to teach children about healthy food and the wonder of herbs and spices. 🌿 🍵 School Food Matters is an inspiring charity aiming to improve children’s access to healthy, sustainable food during their time at school. Our herbal expert Marion Mackonochie joined a soup and bread-making session at Bread Ahead bakery in Borough Market to talk about the health benefits of herbs and spices. Last week the students put their learnings into practice and served up delicious soup and bread at Borough Market to raise money for charity. This is part of a wider campaign to raise awareness of the health benefits of herbs and spices. We are calling on the government to make the following changes: 1. For herbs and spices to be added to the Eatwell Guide. 2. To invest in more research on the health benefits of herbs and spices, to establish how we can best benefit. 3. For the flavour and health benefits of herbs and spices to be taught as part of improved food lessons in school, so we pass on these nutritional benefits to the next generation.
Our #YoungMarketeers made headlines and a pretty penny selling their tasty homemade soups at Borough Market yesterday. Huge thank you to everyone who came down. And a special thanks to Pukka Herbs for your support. We’ll announce how much they raised for The Felix Project soon! #FoodEducation #SchoolFoodMatters #Lunch #Food #Lunchtime #LunchBreak #WhatsForLunch #HealthyEating #EdChat #UKEdChat #SchoolDay #School #Teacher #Teachers #Student #Students #Education

Did you know we don't collect comprehensive, regular and sufficient data on the prevalence of food insecurity in families with children in Australia? Despite growing levels of food insecurity reported and some schools stepping in to help, we won't know the true prevalence or impact. No child should be going hungry in Australia when there is more than enough food to feed the population. Governments need to act: measure food insecurity in families (in a culturally appropriate way) and let's see school lunch programs rolled out across Australia. NSW Department of Education this will help with attendance and learning. https://lnkd.in/gFR9YCyG

What a great organization and an important mission.
Dear Friends, I hope this message finds you well. As many of you already know, I am involved with HEART, a voluntary mission group dedicated to supporting single mothers and their children. HEART is a non-profit, faith-based organization that has been instrumental in providing hope and assistance to women who have been ostracized from their families due to the devastating disease, AIDS. Many of these women were on the brink of death when HEART intervened, and without their help, they might not have survived. I am thrilled to share some exciting news with you all. In just a few days, I will be embarking on a journey to Kenya to initiate a new program called "Women of Africa Soft Toys." It has become increasingly challenging for our graduate mothers to find steady employment, and this program aims to change that. By creating stuffed animals, these mothers will not only have a source of income but also a renewed sense of hope and purpose for their future. Through divine guidance, I have managed to secure contracts with the two largest Carnival soft toy distributors in North America. However, our primary challenge lies in facilitating the export process and acquiring the necessary equipment to kickstart this initiative. To make this program a reality, we require a total of $20,000.00 in funding. Once this program is up and running, the women of HEART will become much more self-sufficient and sustainable, transforming their lives in the process. I am set to arrive in Kenya on the 13th of October, and your support during this crucial time would be immensely valuable. If you can make a donation this week, I can take those funds with me and immediately begin working towards a brighter future for the women of HEART. Your generosity can make a significant impact in empowering these brave women to regain control of their lives. Please consider contributing to our "Women of Africa Soft Toys" program, and together, we can create a lasting positive change. Here is a link to give. https://lnkd.in/gCST3KJ9 If you have any questions or would like more information, please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly. Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to sharing the progress and success stories with you as we move forward on this journey. With heartfelt gratitude, Paul

a quick read that is worth considering...
Dr Kimberly Jackson writes "Seymour’s deliberately distracting juxtaposition of ‘woke’ (or as Chris Bishop described it, ‘exotic’) foods with the ‘unwoke’ basic kiwi sandwich signifies nostalgia not only for a traditionally Pākehā style of food but for a time when ‘the poor’ knew their place and were grateful for any crumbs thrown their way. In implying that school lunches had succumbed to overpriced and distinctly middle-class foods (or, foods from non-Western cultures?), Seymour re-establishes the ground rules for charity recipients recognisable from my historical research: beggars can’t be choosers. Foodbanks and food rescue schemes are groaning under the weight of excess cheap sliced bread. Cheap sliced bread is the mainstay of low-income households, in their efforts to fill hungry bellies. Now, cheap sliced bread is what children will have at school, too." #schoollunches #nzpol https://lnkd.in/gM8C4p_Z
