Socioeconomic Analyst at DG EMPL ~ green employment and skills ~ forthcoming PhD candidate in gender economics @ UCL
The labour market is being continuously re-defined as we discover new ways of working and shift our patterns of production and consumption. 🟢 Transitioning to a climate-conscious economy is no exception.... ... and maybe you noticed it too. How many of us suddenly work in climate-related jobs compared to only a few years ago? Between 2022 and 2023, LinkedIn job postings requiring at least one green skill have grown by a median of 15.2%. But this is only one fragment of the story. The world of 'green' employment is much more complicated and extends beyond (let's face it, often greenwashed) LinkedIn. Now growing in demand, it spans from renewable energy, low-emission electricity production, circular economy, manufacturing of electric goods to insulation and other energy efficiency work, installation of clean energy technologies to nature restoration and much further. Yet, so far, green employment has been very difficult to measure due to a lacking one-size-fits-all definition but also capacity of statistical frameworks to distinguish greenness. I am excited to announce that in the European Commission, we recently launched a project with the Joint Research Centre to focus exactly on that. We aim to explore possible conceptual methods to monitor 'green' jobs in the EU with the overarching goal of monitoring socioeconomic characteristics of workers employed in these jobs. All this also in view of re-employment opportunities of those who may be negatively affected in the transition, mostly in fossil-fuel heavy industries 🟫, to broaden the evidence base for making the #transition #just and #fair. Leaders! Can we achieve sustainable development without sustainable employment? Sustainable development and sustainable employment are two critical concepts, but they are not the same. Sustainable Development is about meeting our needs today without compromising the future. It focuses on protecting the environment, growing the economy, and including everyone in progress. This includes using renewable energy and building eco-friendly infrastructure. Sustainable Employment is about creating lasting, well-paying jobs that help people and communities thrive. It means having jobs that are stable, fair, and offer opportunities to develop new skills. Can we really ensure sustainable development while ignoring sustainable employment? In my view, both ideas are connected. Sustainable development is the big picture, and sustainable employment is a key part of it. Together, they help create a future where progress doesn’t harm the planet or people’s well-being. By supporting both, we can build a better, more balanced world. #Sustainability #SustainableDevelopment #Employment #FutureOfWork #GreenEconomy #SocialImpact

Sustainability Jobs in the EU being advertised on LinkedIn are up nearly 3% on last month and nearly 20% on January but remain pretty stable all year. This is GOOD NEWS - WHY? Stability in the jobs market gives time for candidates and hiring companies alike to make informed choices about the job they are applying for and about the candidates under consideration. It also shows a level of stability in the sector. Boom and bust cycles of hire and fire are never good for the long term plans of companies or their staff and can lead to people leaving the sector. Keeping talent in the sustainability sector is vital for the long term accumulation of skills and expertise to make the difference we all need to make the world a better place. #Sustainability #EUJobs #JobMarketTrends

I was so thrilled to attend The Conduit Green Jobs Revolution conference today. What lit me up was hearing from Kate O'Sullivan who shared findings from LinkedIn's latest Green Skills Report. She shared that the UK has seen a 46% increase in the share of job ads requiring green skills in the past 12 months. And although there is a huge rise is demand, people don't communicate their existing skills in a way that aligns with green jobs. This isn't just about re-training and other formal education, but about upskilling to build on existing core skills. Another great piece of advice from the panel: look at national and organisational climate and sustainability ambitions/targets and research the skills required to achieve it - that's where future-proof jobs will be. #greenjobs #greenskills #sustainabilityjobs #futureofwork

Insightful report from IPPR’s Fair Transition Unit (FTU), authored by Joshua Emden, Andrew Sudmant, and Teresa Farinha, titled ‘Skills Matter: Shaping a Just Transition for Workers in the Energy Sector,’ sheds light on the impact of the UK's transition to a net zero economy on career options for gas sector workers. Two Key Arguments: 1. Transition Speed: o The transition to a net zero economy is progressing too slowly, posing significant risks. This sluggish pace may lead to stranded assets and a cliff-edge scenario for oil and gas sector workers. In such a scenario, net zero targets could either be missed or met through a sudden, disruptive transition. 2. Insufficient Policy Support: o The existing policy framework fails to provide adequate support for a fair transition for gas sector workers. Current measures are not enough to facilitate a smooth career shift for these workers into sustainable, green jobs. Three Key Findings: 1. Normal Job Movement: o In 2021, over 40% of people changing jobs moved to roles that shared, on average, just over 50% of the work tasks with their previous positions. 2. Transition to Green Jobs: o Few workers in the gas sectors could transition to green jobs (defined as jobs in low-carbon industries) with only modest retraining. 3. Retraining Potential: o A larger number of gas sector workers could quickly retrain for climate-compatible (blue) and green occupations, indicating a broader potential for job mobility with appropriate support. Three Key Recommendations: 1. Green Industrial Strategy: o Implement a comprehensive green industrial strategy that includes: - Ending the licensing of new oil and gas fields. - Clarifying the role of gas capacity in the future energy mix. - Introducing strict capture rate standards for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). - Planning for the decommissioning of the gas grid, including defining heat zones and identifying locations where hydrogen may be appropriate for home heating. 2. Fair Transition Bodies: o Establish Fair Transition Bodies consisting of representatives from national and local governments, industries, trade unions, non-union workers, and local community stakeholders to ensure a collaborative approach to the transition. 3. Skills System Reform: o Reform and expand the current skills system by introducing an annual £1.1 billion Green Training Fund. This fund would provide free training to workers in the gas sectors (and other decarbonizing industries) who may need to transition to new occupations. #justtransition #netzeroeconomy #greenjobs #energysector #fairtransition #greenindustrialstrategy #climatecction #sustainablecareers #decarbonization #greentraining #energytransition #climatecompatible #retrainingworkers #futureofwork #cleanenergy #sustainability #energy #renewableenergy
