The Early-stage Researcher network (Bachelor, Master, PhD students, and PostDocs within 2 years after their PhD) provides opportunities for researchers in the field of energy storage to benefit from the fund of scientific knowledge and improve their skills under the supervision of leading scientists and engineers. The network's researchers are given priority in the StoRIES mentoring programme and summer schools. They are also actively informed about conferences dealing with hybrid energy storage, invited to present their work to the StoRIES community to improve quality, and involved in the revision of the project publications. The final section of my PhD thesis has finally been published in #NatureReviewsMaterials, for sure the most demanding but satisfactory article I have worked on so far! You can read it freely at this link: https://rdcu.be/dAuro 📖 This Perspective explores the potential of the analysis of cost and performance applied to laboratory-scale studies on new battery materials 🔋 We presented some case studies on sodium-ion batteries to show how a preliminary estimation of the cost and the energy density of a "real battery" can begin with some basic electrochemical and physical properties usually measured in the lab when working on new energy storage materials. The simulations were done with a freely available software, adapting it to the specific case studies we proposed 🖥️ Our objective is to demonstrate a practical approach for comparing materials and "treatments" (such as pre-sodiation), that can well support the typical metrics used in battery science and help to focus the research on effective solutions 🎯 I would really like to thank my coauthors, Simon Beringer, who (as a Bachelor student!) did an amazing job in understanding and carrying on complex simulations on batteries, and Stefano Passerini, who provided invaluable support for this work and who suggested me once to give a look to a certain cost analysis software 😄 #LithiumIonBatteries #BatteryResearch #ScientificPublication
