I have seen several graduate students prioritizing LinkedIn connections/ YouTube learning over in-person meetings. I was one of them (yes, in the pre-Covid era), but it changed (gladly so). Combustion Summer School is a fantastic initiative at Princeton University led by Prof Chung K Law. While they posted all the lectures on YouTube, I had a hard time justifying why should I go there in person. After all, the videos are up there on YouTube that I can speed up, rewind, and revise as much as I can. But, I ended up going there, and I realized what YouTube does not have: The serendipity of running into people who think similarly and yet differently. I got to connect with some amazing people with whom I can chat/ask for advice anytime I message them. They may or may not be working on combustion, but they are the leading researchers in the field they currently are in, and it always feels enriching to have a conversation with them. This is especially important for international students to do so. Look for opportunities to connect in person. Fly if you can, drive if you must, and catch a train/bus if you can find one in the US.  _____________________________________________________________________ I wonder if summer schools are common across all research fields/areas.
