🦅Find out more about the Iberian Highlands restoration project, led by Fundación Española de Renaturalización - Rewilding Spain and supported by the Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme.     The Iberian Highlands host a wide variety of ecosystems including forest, grassland, and rocky canyons. Land abandonment due to rural-urban migration has led to economic stagnation but also provides opportunity to restore nature at a large scale.     The project is reintroducing native fauna as well as removing dams and weirs to restore ecological processes and kickstart natural regeneration. Restored areas will provide new generations of people opportunities to return to the Iberian Highlands as entrepreneurs, developing nature-based businesses that will breathe new life into the local economy.     🔗 https://lnkd.in/gWmmC6ME

While waterways inherently welcome recreational activities and developmental opportunities, a significant challenge lies beneath the surface. Waterway stakeholders seek harmony amidst recreation, ecology, and commerce. 🌊 Addressing these complex challenges, the Connected River Project, withing AMS led by Wouter Van Bockhaven, Tanvi Anand, and Remco Lenstra, delves deeply into the interplay between these factors. Through a lens of design thinking and a focus on robust ecosystems, the project is dedicated to discovering innovative solutions. As in natural #ecosystems, waterfronts are just as much central interaction arenas in human ecosystems as well. Still in the theme of the summer holiday, in this blog Tanvi Anand, Remco Lenstra and I reflect on how still waters often run deep and become the front line of economic, social, and ecological trade-offs. While ESG reporting is high on the agenda for most organizations in the months to come, our true colors show when our ecological, social, and economic interests conflict. We all want clean and healthy waters to have fun in, but are we then also willing to follow a quotum or pay for access? Barge logistics are a greener, more sustainable mode of transport and decrease the time we're all stuck in traffic, but are we then willing to limit recreational use to ensure safety? These and other trade-offs are guaranteed fun for anyone interested to see how ecosystem innovation can be used to overcome them.

Whether they are temporary or reclaimed habitats, quarries can comprise a diverse range of ecosystems. It is this diversity that can provide vital food, water, and breeding sites for a variety of bird species. Be it flocks of sand martins nesting in sandbanks, or avocets and other waders walking our wetland shorelines, or even falcons circling above. With World Migratory Bird Day celebrated on 11 May, we reflect on the importance of quarries in helping to support these long-distance travelers. To ensure there are always forms of habitat to support biodiversity, Heidelberg Materials has committed to designating a minimum of 15% space within all our active quarries to nature.
